Marlin Firmware 2.0 - should you upgrade and why not?

In this video, I am talking about why you should upgrade your 3D printer to Marlin 2.0 and what might be arguments against upgrading from 1.1.X. Should you maybe stay with the last 1.1.9 version on your 8Bit board? Questions will be answered in the comment section.

Also read my blogpost about memory consumption on 8Bit Boards with Marlin 2.0:

switching over to the cons segment at the exact halfway point of the video is a nice touch.

I have a graber i3, and was thinking about updating the firmware, but you convinced me to keep the working one. Thanks for the video!

I upgraded my main board to the SKR 1.3, so i installed 2.0.0 (& still on 2.0.0).

Another great vid & shared in the Creality discord channel, that I'm involved in 👍🍺

Hi, your video is very useful. Thank you for summerrizing the important stuff in short and clear comparison.
I've also checked the blog post about memory usage, also very helpful.
As "thank you" I will share mi findings that #define SPEAKER costs 1676 bytes in Marlin 2.0.X according to my calculations and tests.
BTW I didn't fit in the flash size by 0.2% or about 300 bytes and had to disable the speaker.

Another great vid. I’m still running original firmware on my anet a8 and have been having a horrible time with first layer and stringing, I’m using your cura profile but to no avail, do you think upgrading to marlin 1.1.9 will help solve a lot of my issues?

I have the Artillery Genius running 1.1.9, I use this version for the MBL mode, if I was to upgrade the board, is the 9point MBL in version 2.0.X?
Also, if I was to upgrade the board, are my original stepper drivers compatible? Thanks!

I've tried 2.0 on two different Arduinos, and I'm having problems with the z-axis motors either seizing, or vibrating.

My Anet a8 has been running 1.1.9 since it came out and works great. I think a good rule of thumb is if it's 8bit stick to 1.1.9, if 32bit go with 2.0

In my opinion I have carried out tests with several versions of Marlin and even variants such as SkyNet, I honestly liked working with version 2.0 the engines move very smoothly, the noise produced by the paused printer and in printing are incredibly lower at Comparison of previous versions, I could build a mod with a 1.3 "oled screen, rotary encoder with switch, sd card adapter and buzzer, it works perfect, easy to configure, even the connection with Octoprint or Simplify3D is better, soon I will add a BLTouch sensor to my Anet A8.

I released the magic smoke from my ender3's melzi. And replaced it with Skr mini E3, the 2.0.x bugfix on it is a lil buggy menu wise. Pause doesn't lift the head, lil things, but i'm waiting for the Auto Build Marlin

So i have a bed leveling probe which says "Smart V3.1" (not an original BL Touch) and have the 8-bit board on a Ender 3 Pro, i also want to keep SD card support, i guess i cant use Marlin 1.1.9 with that version of the probe? Is there something else i can disable in Marlin 2.0 instead of SD card, for example the power loss function, to make it all fit?

Hi
I need to move on to Marlin 2.0 because I have calibration problems with my Anet A8: after calibrating it I send an impression and always start doing it 1 or 2mm above the hot bed. I have tried several things, but without positive results. In several forums, I have seen that they recommend installing the Marlin and from there modifying the parameters, if necessary.
I would very much like to know your opinion.
Thanks in advance

I uptaded to Marlin 2.0.7 because I plan to use mix color gradient which is not available in previous versions. compiled it with platformio cos I added loads of things to it so it wouldn't compile with arduino IDE. You would want to initialize the EEPROM once updated in order to make your BLtouch probe at the right place. Having loads of failed prints due to MKS TFT 28 sending spurious gcode to marlin (MKS gen L board)

I've notcied a wierd issue since updateing to marlin 2.0. When I stop a print if I then immediatly start moving an axis, before it has finished homing, it will then move the axis it was just homing in the direction away from the endstop continuously pushing it against the edge of the rail.

Hope soon you will find the time to show how to install Marlin 2.0 on Anet A8. Thank you for your video, always so full of interesting contest.

Hi,
after I switched from the orginal mainboard to new motherboard BIGTREETECH® SKR MINI E3 V2.0 on both Ender 3 pro, the printer moves to the end at X axis, end the table has also moves out after each layer change, throughout the entire print`s . maybe there was a bug in the system.?

Excellent video! My CR10S is still on Marlin 1.1.0 and I was considering moving to 2.0.x, but I think I'll upgrade it to the last version of 1.1.x instead since it's still an 8 bit board. The printer works just fine, but the thermal runaway concerns me and I'd like to enable a few features (namely BLtouch/auto bed levelling) and disable others (SD card support since I use Octoprint.)
