The Lone Star State is facing a colossal challenge that sounds like something out of a science fiction novel. Scientists are warning that extensive oil and gas drilling over the past several decades has left Texas vulnerable to a growing sinkhole threat. This video delves into the alarming research that suggests parts of Texas could be swallowed by massive sinkholes in the future.

We explore the science behind this phenomenon, examining how the injection of wastewater and carbon dioxide during oil drilling, combined with the deterioration of old wells, is causing significant ground movement. The video takes a close look at the infamous Wink sinkholes, which serve as a stark warning of what could be in store for other parts of the state.

The human impact of this potential disaster is also discussed, with over 47,000 people living in just four of the affected counties. We consider the risks to critical infrastructure, including roads, railroads, and pipelines, as well as the potential for groundwater pollution.

The video draws parallels with the 2012 Louisiana sinkhole disaster, using it as a cautionary tale of what could happen on a larger scale in Texas. We also touch on how this issue extends beyond Texas, with scientists expanding their study to other areas in the Southeast.

Experts weigh in on the need for action, discussing potential solutions and the challenges of balancing economic interests with environmental and public safety concerns. The video concludes by considering the future of Texas and the broader implications of this issue for our approach to resource extraction and environmental stewardship.

This eye-opening exploration of a little-known but potentially catastrophic threat will leave viewers questioning the ground beneath their feet and the true cost of our dependence on fossil fuels.

I thought Oklahoma City was the first major city to be swallowed by a fracking sinkhole.
It's not just oil extraction that threatens to collapse wide areas. Areas where groundwater has been removed to grow crops, like the Valley in California or the Ogallala reservoir under much of the plains States between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains, have had those "pesky environmentalists" ringing the warning bell for decades.
It's not a matter of if, but when.

When you keep pumping oil out, something is going to give. We have sink holes here in Kentucky. We also have many caves, coal mines, strip mines, and pumped out oil fields (one of which is under a man made lake). It was a big shock when a big sinkhole opened up under the Corvette Car Museum here in Kentucky. I have to walk my yard very spring to find any new sink holes that have formed during the wet, cold, winter months. One spring day, I stepped in a sinkhole while pushing a lawnmower. It nearly broke my leg. If Texas goes, Kentucky may not be far behind them.

Talk about Florida! Florida is more deadly! It's been happening there for years.

What BS.... Texas has such a diverse geological make-up. Mountains, deserts, flat plains, rocky terrain and soft swampy areas. Plus the state is huge.

Anytime you take any thing out of the ground you create the potential for sinkholes. Water, coal, oil, mining

I live in West Texas and went through a 5.1 quake. We can't drink or cook with our water.

Doesn't this also happen in areas where there's very little DRILLING for oil. Nature also causes sinkholes because of floods, droughts, freezing and also extreme water table depletion.

With the current Texas administration no discussion of subsidence will get very far. Phoenix has large cracks from subsidence from our hurindous pumping of groundwater. Good presentation.

Gas well fracking trashed my water well we had been using for over 50 years . They put in a gas well about a 1/2 mile from my home
and in less than 6 months my water well started smelling like sulfur and rotten eggs then it dried up after 50 years of plenty of water .
This video prediction wouldn't surprise me . I live in East Texas where a new well is popping up every couple of months .

The same caution applies to areas where coal mining occurred 100 years ago. When it comes to the New Madrid Siesmic zone, a large earthquake could cause the ground to cave in over the old mine sites.

What makes me mad is Big corporations that do this stuff think that people are idiots. Common sense tells you exactly what's going to happen if you have any type of intelligence. It's all about the money not people or their lives nor property. They know exactly what's going on.

I have predicted tha the oil being removed from the ocean floor will cause a complete collapse of the ocean floor ending sea life, that will end a great amount of human life ...😊have a nice day

Wink's second sinkhole did NOT open up! Sink is sink. Sinkholes go down.

It's not a sink hole... It's the continents moving causing voids in the ground ... It happens all the time
