Laniakea: Our home supercluster

Superclusters – regions of space that are densely packed with galaxies – are the biggest structures in the Universe. But scientists have struggled to define exactly where one supercluster ends and another begins. Now, a team based in Hawaii has come up with a new technique that maps the Universe according to the flow of galaxies across space. Redrawing the boundaries of the cosmic map, they redefine our home supercluster and name it Laniakea, which means ‘immeasurable heaven’ in Hawaiian.

I used to clip and save newspaper stories about the Universe. The announcement of Superclusters of Galaxies was in the newspaper in the late 1950's early 1960's, I was in 4th. and 5th. and then 6th. grade at the time. I remember when they first measured and announced the size and age of the known Universe a few years later. Sadly I lost all those clippings of stories somewhere during my life as I am now 64. I think my family, brothers and sister or parents must have found them and thwown them out thinking thery were meaningless. But as a child I used to enjoy teaching those who would listen about the solar system, the galaxy, clusters of galaxies and finally superclusters. Most people had no idea of this science. Funny as it was published in the newspapers as I have already said. I am still always reading any publication on astronomy and our Universe. My most favorite subject in my entire life!

Just take a left at the virgo super cluster and you'll find the milky-way in a cul-de-sac, it's a nice area really, pretty quiet, not much space crime around here. 😂
