Does the Core i3 Make Any Sense?

A case for the Intel Core i3 is shrinking. Should we expect 10th gen (14nm+++) to change things?

CPUs tested in this video:

Intel Core i3 9100F

AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (when available)

AMD Ryzen 5 2600

Remember before Ryzen when Intel passed off a 4c/4t desktop chip as an i5 and a 4c/8t chip as an i7?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Who needs core i3 when you have pentium 4
EDIT: oh yeah, I forgot about the value beast. The Intel 80486dx2

I've got a "case" for the Core i3 right next to my desk. It's also called a circular file.

i got i3-9100f and Rx 580 8gb last year, my whole build cost 450$ and I can't be happier. I contently get 144 fps at pro settings on Fortnite and cod and no issues for 1080p games I usually play.

* I don'y recommend this to new budget builders, 3100 and 3300x are the best options

"4 threads just ain't gonna cut it in modern titles" I've been saying that since 2017 when playing BF1, and my overclocked 6600k was pinned at %100, and GTX 1080 was barely at 60% usage. The framerates where in the low 50s at 1080p. I knew then, quad cores were no longer enough.

1:47 Finally!! Someone who isn't crying about it! If you want to keep your motherboard, the Zen 2 lineup is still here and it'll keep getting cheaper. If you are on a budget low enough that you must keep your motherboard, you will likely not be opting for top of the line Zen 3 (at launch price anyway).

About time they start putting Hyper Threading in their new chips now.

Good stuff as always. It's been a while since Intel was ever considered a value. There may have been an argument back in the bulldozer days, but that feels like an eternity away.

I still use my i3-6100 and a 1050ti (when I actually use my PC, usually I use my Mac), and it serves me well.

The Core i3 has become the new Celeron.

And just like that. My i5 4670k is rendered obsolete.

It all comes down to pricing. I recall with Coffee Lake Refresh the 14nm shortage caused the lower end CPUs all to be scarce and hurt Intel's DIY market. If we can avoid that and the Core i3 stays at a good price it might be a worthy budget option.

I have recently had bought a "spare part" of a AMD Ryzen 7 2700x for under $200. The issue was bent pins. And the seller did unbent the pins. Also, I had updated Asus rog strix b350-f gaming motherboard's BIOS.

If amd isn't around, this chip would be labeled as i5. 4 core 4 thread no hyperthreading.
