The best test if a rock is loose and you wanna know if it is still strong enough to hold your weight is to ask your friend who weighs more to hang from it. If he falls and dies then you should stay away from that rock.

There's also a good point in the fact that a tap/kick/slap is an impulse force, which has a much greater potential for breaking free from the static friction keeping the rock in place. If it survives an impulse of comparable force to your weight, there's a good shot it'll hold your weight if you go slow and gentle :)

One of my friends had a helmet with a dent in it, and a story. He was rock climbing when someone called out "Pear!" Puzzled, he looked up, only to be greeted by a can of pear striking his helmet. An *actual* pear would have been far less damaging - be mindful of what you call out when something drops while climbing, the odd call here had him look up rather than take cover.
