One of the biggest anxieties that can come up in a relationship - especially when in its early days is paradoxically seemingly the most simple:

What do you do when it's time get a gift for your girlfriend or wife?

This may not seem like it's that big of a deal... right up until it's Valentine's Day or her birthday or your anniversary and now you're scrambling for a last minute present and all the stores are closed. Now you're left hoping that gas station roses and a bag of M&Ms is enough to make her forget that you didn't remember to get her a present in the first place.

You don't want to be in this position. You want to be sure that you can give the perfect gift, every single time.

Fortunately, it's easy, when you know the real secret to romance.

I've got a tip too: the best gift is something a person would like to have but would never buy it for himself. Like that nice action figure, which is kinda expensive, or a pair of impractical, pretty shoes. I've once got a giant road sign with anteater (my favorite animal). Would I buy it? Never. Do I want it? Absolutely. It was one of the best gifts I've ever had.

I have always used this technique when buying presents for close family and friends, not just romantic partners. I would take a mental note when someone expressed an interest in something, like a friend who mentioned in passing that he wished he had a hip flask, so I bought him one (and his favourite tipple to fill it) for his birthday a few months later. He was ecstatic. Or a friend who loved Shinedown, so I bought tickets when they were playing near us. Buying good gifts - romantic or otherwise - is about paying attention to someone and knowing what makes them happy. It doesn't have to be a grand gesture, it just has to be thoughtful.

I think of when I used to work retail and how during the holidays women would approach me and ask "hey, you're a man, what should I get my husband / boyfriend for Christmas?" There is no one size fits all correct answer, people simply have to know their partner. Gift-giving can seem shallow and materialistic, but it's also a good indicator as to how well you know the person.

Oh man. I hate Will Ferrell movies, but "Stranger than Fiction" is such a great movie and that scene absolutely made me melt!

I wanna hear your opinion on something, Doc.
There's this lady friend of mine I've only known only through a long distance relationship. I'm interested in visiting her in the not too distant future to see how we get along in person and if we can advance our relationship. In the meantime, I'm thinking about sending her a present for her birthday coming up later this month; one that says "I remembered and I care about you" but not make it seem like I'm coming on to her (already). I've found a service that can send flowers, little cakes and other sweets right to her house. I'm thinking something like that would be a good balance between something harmless and something thoughtful.

What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea?
