How to Think Outside the Box (SHUHARI)

Thinking outside the box mystifies the creative process. But there's this 3 step Japanese framework on creativity and mastery, shuhari, that breaks down how we learn, how we break rules, and how we create and think outside the box.

This framework changed how I learn anything and let me know what you think about this framework!

This perfectly resonates. In architecture, you learn design and engineering principles...then we are also encouraged to turn the paper (floor plan, for example, in this case) upside down to see things newly and freshly in making a solution our own. Thanks Vicky!

These concepts are amazingly shared. Thank you.

Which part of SHUHARI do you usually skip? Shu has definitely been my weakness and I always find myself coming back to rebuild that foundation before moving forward!

I struggle with RI and maybe even Ha. I usually learn the box and then I feel that there are better ways outside of it. But instead of actually trying different ideas I stuck in the analysis of other people practices trying to find the form of my vaguely perceived idea.

I really like your topics, presentation and manner of speech. Such a soft pleasant voice and intonations!

Vicky you are great. A low hanging fruit video idea for the future: Ranking mental models/frameworks. Thanks for the content!❤

I really enjoy your content. It's top quality. But your mic's volume is too low.

Just made an atomic note about this one! Ha! One of my 12 problems is "How does a person with many interests and deep/wide curiosity develop mastery?" -- and this concept feels critical to answering this question. As always, thank you for your insight, Vicky.

An other great video ! To enhance this channel and your impact it seems you apply others japanese principles including the 14th principle of the TOYOTA WAY (lean) : "Become a learning organization through relentless reflection (hansei) and continuous improvement (kaizen)." 😉
Thank you !

I've been power watching your videos over the last few days, I noticed as I was getting to the more recent ones your audio quality is getting worse?
it sounds like its phasing? or like you're in another room?

not mic quality shaming :P just wanted to point out it may be worth investing in a better solution or even looking into your current setup to see if there's any settings wrong etc :)

Edit: I just turned it up real loud, it sounds like you have a webcam mic coming out of left? and a laptop mic coming out of right idk its really weird sounding!

Hello Vicky!

Your videos about Obsidian have been amazing and very beneficial, so thank you. I noticed that you have different colour texts (for eg. green, pink, blue) in your Obsidian. I just want to know how I could achieve the same, please? Is there functionality behind it?

This became the most fascinating note in Obsidian. Love and light.

i can only comment what i see ...
i see analysis & tools & understandings of the procesess at hand ...
vicky, i would like to see more "principles" - e.g. like ying & yang ... equal but opposite etc
or zhuangzi observations of an archer who shoots for pleasure, but humbles when there is a prize attached to hitting the target ...

the one i am working is one that buckiminister fuller expoused ...
aiming for better humanity ... by using the principle of doing more with less
he says this the way of nature ....
all living things adapt ... and the one that prevails, is the one that does it with less energy / effort

if i can give my own analogy
it would be martial arts
the ha: break ... ri: depart .. has no relavance to overcoming the opponent if its just "extra" movements ...
bucky's principle of doing more with less is very clear here ...

father of programming edsger w dijkstra says the aim is elegance ...

*"Elegance is not a dispensable luxury, *
*but a factor that decides between success and failure.*

One of the things I discovered as early as the 1960s,
is that mathematical elegance is not a question of esthetics,
of taste or fashion but something you can translate into a technical notion.*

The Concise Oxford Dictionary gives as one of the meanings of
*'elegant: ingeniously simple and effective'.*

*In practice a program is manageable if you make a truly elegant program...*
firstly because it is shorter than most alternatives and consists of discrete parts,
each of which you can replace by an alternative implementation...
without influencing the rest of the program.*

*But also, curiously the most elegant programs are often the most efficient."* - EWD 1284

Hi, Vicky! Your channel has been helping me to cultivate the habit of thinking in terms of frameworks. I noticed that a lot of your frameworks are Japanese inspired. By any chance, are you of Japanese descent or do you live in Japan?

SOUND built in your videos is hard to listen. PLZ increase the built in VOLUME. I 've watched thousands of videos on youtube but rarely encountered such a frustrating situation!

thinking outside the box simply means thinking outside your pre-conditioned thoughts

Thesis, anti-thesis, counter-thesis. Simple as that. John's dog is white. John's dog is not white. John's dog is yellow. When you hear one, immediately turn it into one or both of the others.
The box is thinking off the first thing you hear, along the familiar pathways.
