China is expelling record numbers of North Korean defectors, instilling fear and desperation in this vulnerable community. In October 2023, 600 North Koreans were forcibly deported in the largest repatriation in years. Human rights groups say the defectors, who North Korea calls "traitors" and "criminals", have disappeared since their return, and warn they may face imprisonment, torture, sexual violence, and even execution.

101 East has exclusive access inside this secretive world, where defectors share harrowing stories of survival, human trafficking and their fragile dreams of finding a safe haven.

Why does China send the North Korean defectors back? That's very evil on their part.

So sad that a leader will decide to be a foe to his people. North Korea dictator should be ashamed of himself seeing how impoverishing his people are.

Dear citizens of the world,

this story reeks of sympathy washing propaganda. if china is so oppressive why don't western countries accept millions of poor Chinese fleeing there.

most of chinese cannot be trusted instead of helping human in need they will abused you. You pray hard to God when your in a situation no one to rely on but yourself. Let God be your companion for every fears you have.

Turkey's situation is also similar to North Koreans. İ am masters alumni and my English, german languages are advanced stage, i cannot immigrate to Schengen or australia or USA even at the age of 51 years old and being baptist christian. İt is impossible to find decent wage Job in Turkey, we are waiting to die naturally. The pension wage that Turkey gives, never enough to purchase New car in Turkey on New apartment in the country. No girl or women want to marry me because of pension wage's lowness. İt is disgusting to live under terror threats since 1979 and under muslim ezan voices coming from mosques. İ am unemployed for 11 years, my Medical specialist father and mother are unemployed for 20 years after they become pensioners with very low wages.

AJ’s story tried to raise sympathy for the North Korean defectors so they pictured all of their lives in China as being abused, sexually trafficked etc. fact is, there are 50 million living in China as the video says, there’s a reason for that…. Also, of course they ultimately prefer to go to South Korea, because they are the same people, and they’ll have legal status and some money to settle down. But you can not blame a country( and the people in the country) for not taking refugees, I.e, most countries are not taking refugees from Syria, from Palestine etc. plus the famine happened in the 1990s, so I’m not sure now, in 2024, whether there’s still large amount of people leaving North Korea as legitimate refugee, like the super poor Chinese or Vietnam people from rural areas can’t just go to another country without a visa and expect citizen treatment? Where I am in Australia we have super strict border rules too. Of course, having read many stories of defectors they have experienced horrendous hunger and I wish countries around the world had helped with food for humanitarian aids back then. And wish them all a better life now
