AWD TEST: Volvo Xc90 Diagonal and Offroad test on ice and snow

We tested the new Volvo XC90 AWD! Quite impressive since once again it was icy and mixed with snow all over the place! Switch it to offroad mode and the truck will send 25% of power to each wheel. But sometimes it tends to allow some wheelspin before braking the wheels without traction.

The car is equipped with winter tires, there is a lot of ice under the snow and the hill is quite steep! The car could have gone up the hill first shot, but the goal is to show how the AWD reacts to a slippy situation!

I love these tests. All the people complaining that he can't drive, that's not the point of this. Going slowly shows the AWD and how it sends power to each wheel.

Looks like this test was done with summer tires?

Excellent video. I am wondering what is the noise you can hear at 4:17? I have a 2016 XC90 and I get the same noise when going slowly downhill and turning.

This film is a fine example of how the Volvo works-around in a dynamic fashion to get-it-going! Nice Volvo! If the tires were to be a bit more narrow and less on the highway performance the Volvo would really eat-up this stuff!
Overall, very nice work in a beautiful and capable automobile!

This car wasn't meant to go off-road. The Haldex can't deliver the same level of performance as a lockable centre differential with a low-range gear or even a Torsen system.

definitely not snow tires. These must be all season

Traction control must be off, it will climb that easily.

wheels are spinning faster, so try climb by shifting it in #2.

I wish I had the time to test vehicles back to back with the same tires in the same conditions. I would have like to have seen a Suburau try that uphill climb you were doing at both slow speeds. I don't think you have a Suburau video do you? When I'm ready to buy I'm looking what's the best system that my money can allow me to buy for my needs. Not sure what is better yet.

Subtitles are needed in the video In the description you make it seem as if it is not in off road mode initially with each test. With the conditions, it should be in off-road mode 100% of the time.

Great video and nice car! Can i ask you, what do you think went up the hill better, the Volvo or the Honda Pilot?

they dont know how to drive xc90. there is W (winter) mode in all models. At least just put on 3rd gear and it will move over snow/ice. I never had such problem with mine. winter tires are must, especially for brake on snow/ice.

So 21" and not on winter tires. I think it could handle this on 20" (or less) with winter tires easily.
How about Off Road mode? Was it in it?

Wow he actually got
Up that snow hill? Im impressed as I thought no way but he did! Btw is the new model (this one) better than the previous one or other way around - I mean off road as I want the 2012 model… any thoughts? Thanks

I have a 2005 Volvo XC 90 AWD the car is a monster in the snow. I have a 114, 450 and the Volvo and it runs like new. I don't know if I would buy another after seeing this. My Jeep GC 4x4 goes any where I want to go.

From what I've seen in this video it's not impressive especially in the diagonal test. I got a question for you. On some or most crossovers or SUVs the lock button or option that lets you use this function up to a set speed or mph what is it locking up? Is it just 50'50 split front to back left to right or all four wheels locked ?

When driving Haldex AWD like some Audi, Volkswagen, Volvo, Saab you should press on the gas a bit, not floor it, maintain decent pressure on gas for a few seconds so that the computer can transfer power to the right wheel, what you did at first was remove your foot at the first sign of slip, or floor it, the Haldex would not work that way.

Crossovers are not made for off road. Its not an SUV, 4 wheel low or locking center or differentials. Its a speed bump mobile. And a very luxurious one at that.
