Volvo XC90 SUV review - CarBuyer

Volvo launched the XC90 to great fanfare in 2002. It was the brand's first full-sized SUV and impressed with its family friendly seven-seat interior, chunky body and go-anywhere 4x4 system. Its large boot is extremely practical, with a split tailgate making loading heavy items easy, while the three rows of seats offer plenty of space. There are also lots of storage cubbies inside. But the V8 is thirsty and the D5 diesel is loud at high revs. Plus, modern rivals are more responsive and better to drive.

I think like most Volvos, this design has aged pretty well. It still looks classy to me.

With few exceptions, most reviewers don't drive the XC90 enough to know how well it corners. It does have a wallow in the first part of a hard, fast turn. But that shouldn't put you off---just keep pushing it, and don't chicken out. It will suddenly go all solid, with a fantastic gripping feel. I don't know if it's haldex kicking in and taking out understeer, or if it's just how the suspension works. And I live in the Colorado foothills--I often take sharp highway turns at 20mph over the limit.

My dad has one of these, absolute tank it is, only a 2.4 but boy oh boy it moves and it sounds great

Volvo updated their dash with the 2016 version and loads more besides. Check out their T6 Supercharged/Turbo. Lovely SUV, can't fault it and it even has Heads Up Display. Just bought one.

Yes I see what you mean there. Well for a car that has been in production since 2002 and had only the most minor updates, I'm afraid that is what we should expect. But when this car was released it was quite a winner. So when the next generation is released, we can have high hopes that it will "wow" the crowd. I am sure it will be much more modern and luxurious, like Volvo's current models. In a recent press conference Volvo announced the renewal of 10 of its models in 2013 so we just havetowait

It must be one heck of a car because it has been on the market since 2002 (10 year!, minor changes), normally a model lasts 3-4 years before a facelift. This is what keeps Volvo alive do to the flagship-role it has, and it has done a great job.
