"Less demanding on the server" means "we don't want to upgrade our servers, not even the outdated softwares. so let the data be crunched on the user side. afterall, they always use the most efficient things."

Phones run slow already just running crummy IOS|Androd, plus most of those server farms manage manage huge databases, and it'd be hard to have someone's phone help with the computing when the gains would be offset by the time+difficulty on both ends because of the extra IO sent back and forth. There may be some cases where it helps, like a little bit, but don't expect massive server farms to be going anywhere.
