How Will the 2030 BAN on Fossil Fuel Cars Impact You?

The UK is banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from the year 2030, and hybrids from 2035, with a move to EV and zero emissions cars. How will this affect the prices of cars? How will this affect our day to day lives? How will this affect our bank accounts? In this video I tell you everything we know so far about this new ruling, and speculate on why it's come now, and what it will mean for these questions.

I hope you enjoy the video!

It'll end such a huge popular culture. I'm 16 so still have a year till I can drive, won't be able to drive used cars, let alone new cars for long after I've passed my test. I know I'm not the only one, but it's a huge shame

How can they see us going full electric vehicles befor having fully developed the infrastructure for it
It's like bying a train without having a track

It kind of annoys me as I can’t even drive yet and they’re already talking about the ban of my favourite thing.

At this point the gov might as well say "stop breathing because you breathe out too much co2"

I’m literally training to be a mechanic now on my final year, saw this law and now I’m trying to find a place to start training to work with EV’s but there’s so few it takes the piss. Closest one is 3 hours away from me just feel a bit screwed over now

The pure electric cars have only been around for 10 yrs for us to adopt the first cars it took over 50 yrs. so I doubt that the government will be able to support the promises as the out comes will take too long

First they say new cars will be electronically speed limited, and now they must also be electric? Reckon if we were ever to drive to France or Germany, our cars will be a laughing stock, not that we will be driving there anyway because our cars won't even go that far. And what about those of us that don't have driveways, or live in flats and use private parking areas? Are they serious going to have charging ports set in all these areas in just 10 years? And imagine the queues at charge stations on motorway services. Someone needs shooting.

My thoughts on e-cars

1. The batteries only last so long, leaving the second hand buyer to pay for a new battery. Which for some cars cost a premium.

2. how are we going to dispose of old used batteries? They have always been notoriously hard to recycle. Let alone lithium ion!

3. How are we going to cope with a higher percentage of the population charging cars?

If this happens the cost of electricity will skyrocket as demand will increase so much and the non driver then gets to feel the pinch also

This kind of thing is why I bought the Porsche, to have a sports car with the screaming NA engine while I can. That said, I miss the insane quiet luxury of the GS as much as I would miss the howling flat 6 of the Porsche, so that side of things doesn't worry me. What does, is that I live in a top floor flat, so if I have to buy a car that needs plugging in, how exactly am I going to do that? That's solvable though.

Honestly though I look at it like this: we can't keep driving petrol cars. I love them but there just isn't any choice. With that in mind, I can't see a downside to hydrogen power. Sure we need the right facilities to produce the fuel from water using renewables so there's no emissions there; plus the fuel tanks are a bit big and can't be spread out like batteries, but that stuff is all easily solvable, so the cars can be great and the rest will inevitably follow. Batteries, on the other hand, involve digging up finite resources. That sentence alone is enough explanation to show that battery-powered EVs are obviously not a long term solution, regardless of any other factors.

However...cars get too much focus when it comes to environmental issues. The change there is already happening, but what about things like construction? Concrete production alone is responsible for nearly 10% of the world's CO2 output at this point- more than cars do. Incidentally, CO2 per capita in China is lower than the US, for example, worth accounting for. Also they've pledged carbon neutrality by 2060. Final tangential note- the "stop eating meat" arguments are badly thought out too, you can grow sheep on hills, but not crops. Everyone going vegan would reduce total available land for food production, with many obvious problems as a result. Also the UK has twice as many deer as the habitat can support...so shooting and eating Bambi benefits everyone.

I feel like 2030 is a bit too soon because while infrastructure for electric cars is improving, Britain is still far behind and I don't think that the government has any plan to take it further. I watched a video where NIO created a battery swap station where it can swap electric (only NIO) car batteries in a short period of time. Now that is something

So this is a Fossil Fuel ban, does that include Synthetic Fuels?

Be interesting to know what you think... if China is manufacturing for UK, US etc... should the pollution count go towards the producer or end user?

Big fat *_No._*
*_Yes_* for the vid tho :)

I mean I guess it's inevitable and good for the climate change and all but eehhhh

And aren't lithium batteries horrid for the environment ?

Does anybody even know how impossible it will be to stop making gasoline vehicles? In America 3.2 trillion miles are driven every year. The amount of electricity required to charge those cars would require building a nuclear power plant every 3 weeks until that date

jonjudice

The other thing that you didn't quite mention is that due to the pollution caused by the very manufacturing process of all these cars, sanctions imposed on people driving used petrol cars are actually counterproductive because it is less sustainable to scrap your old car and buy a new 0 emissions car than simply to buy a 10 year old car and drive in until it no longer moves. simply buying a
