2030 ban on sale of new petrol & diesel cars and vans | Electric Moments from LeasePlan

In 2030 we will see the biggest ever change to the British automotive market with the ban on the sale of new combustion cars and the ban on hybrids by 2035. Driven by concerns over climate change and air quality, this will be a significant step in the 'green revolution', but what will it mean for you?

As part of our Electric Moments series, Robert talks to Matt Walters, Head of Consultancy Services and Customer Value at LeasePlan, about what will happen and when with these bans and why you should start considering your options sooner rather than later.

We also speak to real world EV drivers to find out their experiences of making the switch to electric and why it's easier than you might think.

As a global leasing company, LeasePlan manage nearly two million vehicles across more than 30 countries and have over five decades of experience to draw on. This gives them the ability to make a real difference to the world – and they are seizing the opportunity by putting sustainability at the heart of everything they do.

26:04 Spot on! "Range anxiety" is being replaced with "Charger anxiety". i.e. No longer "Can I make it to the charger?" but "Will the charger be working?". If the charger's communications are down will it default to "free vend" or just shut down?

Great, all encompassing, and thorough take on EVs and systems in UK. Keeping this video at my fingertips when talking to people. Mat Walters, great interview, really knows landscape!

Very well articulated Mr Walters, a calm and confident approach from industry leaders will help us all adapt, learn and adopt the EV future.

I agree with Matt, my hope and expectation is that the market will move faster than the politicians. I would not be surprise if by 2025 EVs already make up more than 40% of the new car market and plug in hybrids deserve to go the way of the dodo even faster than that.

I have been enjoyed, so thank you for delivering.

Casually no mention of the battery production and mining processes for the raw materials, what is being done to improve this side of things?

I wonder if offering a train ticket instead of a company car allowance would be a good idea for some companies. It reduces car use and makes a major difference to employees given that a season ticket can cost upwards of £5k a year.

Excellent news. As an Aussie, I despair for our fossil fuel loving federal government. Sadly - and in spite of the public support for transitioning to a clean energy future - the Australian federal govt is dominated by right-wing science-denying politicians who are led by their fossil fuel donors. Very sad that Australia is many years (and possibly decades) behind public opinion for the transition to clean energy. However, many Aussies have installed rooftop solar.

Leicester Clean Air Zone got scrapped in April. Interestingly, since 2015 when it was announced, the air quality has improved enough to not warrant it.

6:13. Matt makes a great point here about lease companies [and I'll add in the whole fleet buyer segment]. That's three cycles by 2030. So the 3rd cycle is on the cusp of 2030. Clearly that's not on. Nobody in their right mind is going to lease a new ICE vehicle near 2030. But the previous cycle is barely going to happen either. If the lease companies gear up with ICE vehicles in 2025-6, what tiny price are they going to sell them at after 3-4 years? So the second cycle is out as well. Truthfully, there is only one buying cycle left for the ICE vehicle and that's coming up in the next year or so. Frankly, you'd have to be a brave company to stock up on ICE cars, because even here the knock on effect of resale will diminish your end of lease demand. I think new ICE vehicle leases and outright sales are about to drop through the floor within the next few years. The 2030 ban effectively kills new ICE between 2025-7.

Please stop saying £25k is affordable! For who exactly? People are up to their eyeballs in debt to buy new cars, total madness! I would love an EV but the problem alot of us have is that by the time we would normally buy a car (say ten years old £3k) we won't be able to as there won't be enough ev's from 2020 to buy in 2030 like there has been in the past with ICE cars.

Videos like this gives me hope, we will do it. Thanks for you part.

It makes me laugh when you hear the anti-EV crowd (ICE-holes) invent more and more ridiculous scenarios as to why EV's would be no good for them.
"what if I have to drive 500 miles, I'd have to charge up once there and once back so it'd be faster in an ICE car by 40 minutes each way".
Who drives non stop for 500 miles?

If an EV does X number of miles, ICE-holes will suddenly need to regularly do X+1 miles.
If an EV costs X number of pounds, ICE-holes will only consider buying one if it's X-1.

Then you have their "special" way of thinking:

They say they can't have a home charger and seem to think they have to drive to a charge point and sit in their car for the duration.
They say the grid can't handle it, like the grid will stay the same and not grow to meet the demand.

Great video, my one concern is vans, not cars. I load my van with tools, materials etc and then drive long distances. A fully loaded van’s range will drop considerably especially in the winter when the heater, radio de-mister is on which now includes more makers having windscreen clearing. How many times will I have to stop on the journey to the job to recharge. I’m not a nae sayer just looking at practicalities of running a van based tradesmen business.

Flats usually have parking spaces, fine, room for home charging, all the people being interviewed over YouTube about owning an electric car seem to have nice big driveways where all of their cars can happily charge overnight, but I’ve not heard what the solution will be for those in Victorian terraces where you even struggle to park anywhere near your house let alone have home charging. Are we going to have rows and rows of houses with cables strewn over the pavement or people queuing for hours in the morning at charging stations or is there a solution I haven’t seen?

So Bristol are jamming all deliveries into 9am to 2pm? Just when people want to go walking around town and shop. Not sure that’s well thought out.

Very intelligent contribution from the EV owner at the end of the video. Very informative. Well done FCP.

The EV1 was based on a patent for batteries (NiMH, I believe). Due to pressure from their ICE division (even then they realised that EVs needed very little maintenance) they scrapped the car and sold the patent, under the strict condition that it wasn't used for electric vehicles.

That "electric moment" when you see all the idiots in trying to top up their cars tanks. Because, the TV reports not enough HGV drivers to deliver the fuel and they empty the petrol stations where I live and where I work. EV here I come.
