I love seeing that he lives in a normal house in a normal neighborhood, despite probably being the most famous mechanic in the world now.

When I had a Mercedes w204 they wanted 1200 to fix the cracked fog lights. I bought plastic replacement instead of glass that time for 60 bucks and it took me less than an hour to install. Scotty is right.🤣

The truth about mechanics is that they often forget that they are paid for their knowledge, not necessarily ability. 90% of work done by a mechanic is often just parts swapping, which can be done by anyone with the right tools and the willingness/ability to learn. This is in-contrast to an Engineer who is paid for both his knowledge and ability.

Another good note, is that when a mechanic says "I fixed or built this/that" he/she is often using that word wrong. Swapping a part, should be called I replaced your "XYZ", but saying the word "fixed" sounds a lot better and like a tougher task. Similar saying "I rebuilt your master cylinder" is a lot better then saying "I replaced the gaskets inside your master cylinder".

In essence using a word that makes something sound harder then it actually is, comes with the salesman part of being a mechanic. Another term that is often used is "I re-established the connection between XYZ", meaning they likely just plugged it back in.

Anyway, to be fair sometimes the knowledge of a person who has done "XYZ" job a hundred times more then you comes in handy. So mechanics are useful and do come in handy to call on when you need to, but there are tricks to the trade.

I wish I *COULD* change the spark plugs in my car myself & save the headache of someone else doing it. Can't change 'em because the FREEKIN Intake manifold is in the way on the right bank! Easy as can be on the left bank though!

Picking between a dealer and an independent mechanic is like deciding between swimming with a gator or a crocodile😂

Your're totally right Scotty.
There are a bunch of things we can do to our cars. I never though I could do such things as cleaning MAF sensor and throttle body.
I've learned not to trust shops anymore and because of that I do the basic maintenance myself with quality parts and I make sure it's done correctly.

Ford dealer wanted 149$ to just plug in a obd II diagnostic tool. Literally it was 149$ to just plug it in and if they didn't find a problem or a stored engine code it was still 149$.

Scotty! I've been watching your videos for a while now and I'm actually located in Knoxville! I have a 98 Grand Cherokee with 390, 000 miles that I've had for 6 months now. The tranny seems to be rough shifting. I've had my independent mechanic change the solenoids in it for me 3 weeks ago. The check engine light is off now and it ran smoothly for maybe the first week. Now, there are times when it will decelerate almost when I'm trying to accelerate. What do you recommend I do to prevent tranny/engine damage? I've gotten an oil change recently and changed out my air filter as well.

I was a dealership mechanic for 25 years and spent the first 15 years of my career with independent shops. When the independants stopped paying commission and went to an hourly wage I started working for the dealerships because I could get paid paid vacation time, paid holidays, and health insurance that I could not get with the independents. Nowadays dealership technicians are paid in dollars per flag hour. And only amount to 25 to 30% of what the dealership charges per hour for labor. It's no wonder there is a shortage of qualified technicians now.
