One of the bits of Latin pronunciation that tends to get my own students is the consonantal i. This video intends to give tips on how to recognize when i is a consonant or a vowel.

Another very common and important exception: “etiam”! Trisyllabic (with a short i), even though it’s a compound of et + iam

I mean, this hassle could be avoided if more people used the letter J, but since for some reason only god knows we mostly stopped doing that, this is really useful

I think 'ius' looks cooler than 'jus'.
but why do we now generally dont use j in latin while using both u and v? both i-j and u-v pair used to be one letter but was brought abiut to differentiate vowel and consonant. but why only u-v pair gets used im todays latin?

Hello, I hope you are doing fine. I've got a question:

I've certainly noticed that it is mostly preferred to use i as both a vowel and a consonant, rather than using both i/j. Is this i/j distinction also optional on scientific names in general, either astronomic, phylogenetic naming conventions, among others (please notice Harpyia milhauseri [tawny prominent], but Harpia harpyja [harpy eagle], as well as Ursa Maior, but I've also seen Ursa Major)?

I think you mean "when AM i a consonant".

Following your comment on Jason and Julius pronounced with the "i" but changed to the English "j", how would the name Jesus be pronounced in ancient Latin? Seems the rule would be that it would use the "i" sound vs the "j"? Please clarify. Thanks.

I first read the title as 'When is I a coconut?'

Isn't the usual term _vocalic_ not _vowelic_ ?

Random Latin question. How would you syllabize the verb ‘relinguere’? My confusion lies in the g-u-e-r-e.

There's also a third person singular verb "iit" where I believe the first i is not a consonant like it should be.

Can I assume the basic rules of position in relation to vowels and consonants as true for Vu, in the case of a text that writes it all as u?

In portuguese the letter i also represents both [j] and [i].

Caesar carri donna militari orgi versus Belgao, Helvetii, Venetii, Britanni - iunemit. 'Romis glorius, ' sed Caesar, 'Nomen me impunit'. Meni tridit, Veringetorix, forin stans; Caesar noctim sili fors ticinis nec aut. Ab ludi nervi felo, Gaius Julius, iubet.
