In the episode in which Sandy wants to prove she's better than the sea creatures and all the chracaters show their abilities towards Sandy, Spongebob even shows that he can reproduce himself and ask Sandy if she can do that too.

So it's even in the show. But that ofc doesn't mean he can't have feelings for Sandy also.

Just my two cents but i think spongebob is just not familiar with gender roles. He has little to no idea of what is considered feminine and what is considered masculine and he just likes to do what he likes without worrying about what others think
