Description:

In this video we'll have a look on the conflict between Spain and Portugal. Well it's not really a conflict, but more a border dispute that dates back to 1801. For more than 700 years, the border between Portugal and Spain remained preatty much the same, with one exception: Olivença. This area was part of Portugal until the spanish troops conquered it in the War of the oranges.
Later, in 1815, Spain agreed to give back the city of Olivenca to Portugal, but they never did it. That's why Portugal are still claiming the are, although it is part of Spain.
But we'll talk more about all of this in this video, so make sure you do not miss it.
Feel free to write your opinion about this in the commnets.
Hope you'll enjoy the video!

Transcript:

Why Spain and Portugal are both claiming this town? You see, the border between Spain and Portugal is almost identical as the one defined in 1297, being the oldest geopolitical border in the world, after the border of Andorra.
But for 18 kilometers, the border is not defined and this is because Olivença was under Portuguese sovereignty from 1297 until 1801 when the Spanish and French troops took the town during the war of the oranges.
In 1815, during the Vienna Treaty, Spain promised to give the city of Olivença back to Portugal, but this never happened.
Although both Spain and Portugal are part of EU and Schengen Area and the border is practically not existent, this still represents a border dispute as Portugal does not recognize Spanish sovereignty over the territory. This is one of the few border disputes in western Europe, do you know others?

Why did they stop using oranges for war?

Actually, the disputed territory is a but bigger than shown in the video. It includes the municipality of Táliga (in Portuguese: Talega), which during Portuguese rule was part of the municipality of Olivença, but the Spanish made it into its own municipality.

Personally, i believe it morally belongs to Portugal, Spain promised to give it back

As far as I know, the Treaty of Vienna was signed as a Peace treaty. Spain promised to give Olivenza/Olivença back to Portugal. But just as it was signed, Portugal, encouraged by the United Kingdom (Don't know why they would obbey or what they were getting out of it?) declared war using their positions in Brazil to invade Uruguay, that was part of the Spain Viceroyalty of Río de la Plata. Thus, Olivenza/Olivença was not given back because of this. Blame King João VI for it.

Nowadays, if you visit Olivenza/Olivença you'll find very cheerful people that can speak both languages and consider themselves Sons of Spain and Cousins of Portugal. You'll be able to breathe good atmosphere.

All in all, Portuguese people are good neighbours.

This shouldn't be a dispute between our countries, it should be a sign of union, I don't care who owns the city, we are brothers 🇪🇦❤️🇵🇹

Looking at the geography the town is on the Spanish side of the Guardiana River, if Spain gave it back then it would make Spain more vulnerable to losing territory in the north and possibly Split Badajoz in half. That's if they were to defend it in a military situation, so that is probably one of the other reasons why it wasn't given back. Natural features almost always define national borders.

Yeah there's a few border disputes usually involving the UK.

There is a very similar fight between Vietnam and Cambodia. It is a high rock outcropping above a river valley. Every so often a handful of guys run off the other guys and hoist up their flag. Then a few years later it is the first guys turn again. Been going on for hundreds of years.

So basically: Spain signed a treaty, then refused to abide by said treaty.

The 2019 Andorran border change: "Am I a joke to you?"

(In 2019, France gave 200m² to Andorra, because an Andorran road was making a deviation by France for some reason. It posed administrative and financial problems about who was in charge of the maintaining of this portiob of the road and what Road Laws were applied here. So France decided it was a lot simpler to just give the 200m² to Andorra so this road would be 100% on its territory)

Despite the name, the war had nothing to do with oranges, except for the fact that the Spanish minister Godoy sent the queen an orange branch during the siege of Elvas.

So basically it is Portuguesse territory unlawfully occupied by Spain.

I'm from the Portuguese municipality of Elvas, next to Olivenza/Olivença (Southeast) and Badajoz, Spain (East) and I know some fun facts about Olivenza/Olivença: many in the last few years have required and acquired the Portuguese nationality and the elderly can still speak Portuguese, though more and more people have started to learn Portuguese at school.
