Rest of the cameras: Autofocus

Fuji: Outoffocus

As much as I loved the Fujifilm cameras, these issues is the reason why I just got my Q3 and I couldn’t be happier at this point.

I went bird hunting this weekend with my X-T5 and the 100-400 and of course used the bird subject detection. Of around 300 shots of flying birds I probably have 5 with a bird in focus...It's just gotten terrible.

My problems with the autofocus doesn’t even involve auto-tracking. I went to an arboretum the other day to photograph flowers. I had the X-T5 in AF-S mode since I didn’t have a moving subject. The camera would not focus properly within the AF box. What the heck, the latest firmware update now has compromised shooting of still photography. It’s the first time I’ve had a problem with the X-T5 having focusing issues in AF-S mode. These weren’t even “false positives” images. The camera’s autofocus wouldn’t even give me a green box AF confirmation when focusing on a single, subject flower. I noticed that my focusing box was placed directly on the flower while the camera focused on the background space. Recomposing the scene and half pressing the focusing/shutter release button did not help. I was well within the minimum focusing distance. It felt like the camera wasn’t even trying to acquire focus from the green focusing box. Soon after, my camera completely froze with a black out screen. I took out the battery to reset camera. Focusing seemed OK after that. I suspecting bugs in the new update.

Left Fuji for Canon. It always felt like I was fighting my Fuji to focus or operate how I wanted, with my Canon autofocus is a set it and forget it type thing and lightning fast, accurate and intuitive.

The scarcity issue is my biggest beef with them.

I went with the Nikon Zf recently and sold my Fuji X and GFX. I didn’t do it for any of the problems you mentioned, but I will say the beauty of Nikon is that if I was shooting professionally I could easily get a Nikon z6 if anything happened to my Zf. No shortage of cameras. Fuji is playing a dangerous game

been a fuji user since the OG x100 came out back in 11.
i always thought this AF speed is only going to be temporary, and the next iterations to be at least better.
fast forward now, i sold my x100V, and got an A7CII.
i gave fuji 13years.

We need more videos like this! More fuji users have to start talking about this issue. Especially for video my xh2s is basically unusable for autofocusing. We are not getting gear for free. I ve been saving for half a year to buy a piece of gear I was hoping it would be an improvement over my xt3 and this is what we get. Moreover fuji's complete silence on the issue is so unprofessional.... Such a shame really...

It's hard to believe my H2S worked fine when been released, but after all the updates, I'm trying to figure out how to focus on my son's eye when he run towards me😂

5 months since this video and still no autofocus fix for the xt5 from fujifilm... that's absolutely crazy! I'm already looking for alternatives like the nikon zf and maybe sell the most of my fujifilm equipment.

While I find the predictive AF features amazing sometimes, I find they get in my way. I'm fine with contrast detect with a single point. Sometimes, simplicity is king.

I honestly don’t know why so many photographers are ok with subpar equipment?! As a Photographer, I want my work flow to be as smooth and easy as it can be! 😅

I looove Fuji. But this AF issue is making me miss my Sony A7CR.

Many years ago, I was a Canon shooter. I didn’t like how slow the improvements were and how many features we wanted were only attainable through Magic Lantern. Then came Fuji who had all the features I wanted at the time but, moreover, the firmware updates they provided for new AND old cameras were game-changing. And, at the time, the autofocus was on-par with dslrs. Now, these issues are a really big deal. They have to know that. I hope it gets better.

I agree with you on all points. I really like the XT5, but genuinely feel left out in the cold when it comes to issues that the brand want to blame on users rather than their product.

In many ways it’s the end users that are shaping Fuji and the current market!

I know my XT20 is old, but I know what to expect of the AF depending on the scene and it's fine once you adjust to it. I havent had the chance to try any of the newer cameras, but it's suprising the amount of complains that are coming this last year. Hope they get back to track soon.

I can't agree more with you. I have the same issue with the XS-20. AF. All of over the place both for photography and videography. XT1-4 are bizarrely enough way more reliable with the C-AF limitations

This makes me glad I held onto my XT3. I was strongly considering upgrading, but with all the firmware issues and auto focus struggles, I don’t think I can rely on the newer cameras for my business.
