When I watched the film for the first time I picked up Colonel Shaw’s developing PTSD or Shell Shock. Him getting shocked from a shutting door may have reminded him of the cannonballs that took lives in the battle of Antietam

Robert Gould Shaw was also only around 25 when he received this promotion and consequently died. I always found it kind of funny and how he was a war hero receiving a promotion while also being led through the crowd by his mother and being called "darling."

I love this movie and this scene. Robert Shaw seems very overwhelmed being called from a captain up to a colonel in rank. As we know him accepting the promotion eventually cost him his life. All Union soldiers gave some in the Civil War and some gave all.

I ALWAYS loved this actresses line read here. She's beaming with such pride at the idea raised.

Everyone in the room seems to. It goes to show that there were good people back then.

Frederick Douglass's hair must have turned gray pretty early on in his life because this film is set around 1862 or 1863 and he was only in his early to mid-forties at the time.

0:47 I can't help but laugh everytime since the spot on look on Frederick Douglass is so accurate in my opinion it's like he came out of the history books.

This movie shows the acting range of the underrated Matthew Broderick

Only three years removed from “one man’s struggle to take it easy.”

My favorite part of this scene is Forbes (Cary Elwes) getting hammered on champagne and liquor and watching his buddy Robert take the commission… 😂🤣

The face he makes when Shaw offers him second-in-command of the regiment is priceless. 😂🤣🤣

I wonder if it was the news of a promotion for (at the time) an unheard of unit and the slight PTSD he got at Antietam, that which made leave the room. Perhaps to collect himself?

They cheated during the production. They sent a group of interns back in time to bring Douglass back for this scene.

Seems like he could have used his privilege and wealth to avoid the draft but he chose not to. That’s something to think about.

I fear that a part of Colonel Shaw never left Anteitam.

0:45 if they can make a movie of Harriet Tubman, they can make one about my main man, Fredrick Douglass.

why would Frederick Douglass have his back to a meeting like this?

I always thought Douglas was rude interrupting the Governor.

- “Robert, have you met Michael Jordan?”
- Robert: “Mr. Jordan.”
- Governor Andrew’s: “I understand you were at Freaknik.”
