We’ve been seeing a lot of new computers around here lately, but none of them have intrigued us quite like Microsoft’s new Surface Studio. This all-in-one PC has a 28-inch, Pixel Sense multitouch Display that can be adjusted to an almost completely horizontal position. It even has a new input device that attaches to the screen called the Surface Dial. There’s a whole lot of tech to dig into with this thing so let’s get to it, and tear it down!

Check out the full teardown!

5400RPM drive? That's not acceptable even for a base model, especially for that price.

What a beautiful piece of engineering.

The 5400 RPM HDD would be the first component to upgrade. It´s a joke even when combined with an SSD. The 5400 RPM HDD was something I didn't expect to be found in a 3K machine. Even the high end 5K iMac with 2TB fusion drive has a 7200 RPM HDD.

I could watch these teardowns all day. Problem is, there are not enough of them for my lifetime. Make more!

If I replace the SSD, and the HDD, will it run like two SSD drives instead of a hybrid?

>3000dollar device, no full SSD storage... wtf Microsoft?!

Not sure if nonremovable was the goal, but it would have been pretty easy to make the thing a half cm higher, and add removable option. Heck. I wouldn't have mind if it was 1- 2 cm for bigger heatsink.

Great video. Was expecting it to be more of a nightmare. Don't know why I always watch these teardown reviews but I just do. Great production quality.

How hard would it be to retrofit a surface book (performance base) to run a broken based studio as a monitor? Ie replace the box with a laptop.

Wait, so you can upgrade this bad boy up to 4TB SSD and 1TB That's a big deal. I would love to see the next version sport a ssd out of the box with a Pascal GPU, at least a 1070m would be great. If they figured out SLI that'd be greater. And maybe some hidden ports on the front that can be revealed with a sliding piece of metal or something. I understand their push for minimalism from a design perspective, but they sacrificed a bit of functionality in the process which is never good.

Given that the fans are the most likely item to wear out in the base, it seems good they are right there under the cover.
