Surface Laptop Studio was on my AVOID list, because I assumed it would be a nightmare to repair it myself, especially the display and potentially a glued in battery. This video is very powerful, as it has now moved this to the top of my list for my next mobile workstation. Thanks for this video and also putting the RTX A2000 into this device. This is a huge step in the right direction Microsoft, seriously thank you, please do not stop here.

My old Surface Book 1 wishes it was this repairable. Such a positive change to make these devices more serviceable and recyclable.

Microsoft, if you keep that way into repairability, especially if you emphase it on your next surface laptop, it's a win

I hope this is the beginning of consumer friendly and sustainable devices.
Please design future devices with *modular components* and make them *easier to repair/upgrade* !

If only Linus saw that sticker that's been hiding the 2 screws, he would still have an undamaged Surface laptop studio.

This is a major improvement over previous Surface devices!

My only real concern is the two final screws holding on the cosmetic plate are hidden under a vinyl sticker, which would make reassembly next to impossible to maintain the aesthetic cohesiveness. A pin released panel like the SSD/SIM panel on the Surface Pro would be much sturdier, accessible, and easily reinstalled.

Thank you for making such an effort at improving repairability and keep up the good work!

Would be great to see a video where you put this device back together (especially cosmetic tape). Where and how customers can buy replacement parts and I hope they won't cost more then actually the device itself? But overall it's a big improvement for reparability.

This is a great step taken by Microsoft towards repairablity.

So good to see how much can be replaced and how little adhesive is used. It'd be awesome if a future iteration made the battery replaceable, too, but I imagine that's a bit more challenging to engineer than other components.

Also, props for adding that note at the end about needing to connect a charger after reassembling - probably saved someone out there from panicking ;)

This is a great first step towards reparability, I hope to see more!!

Great to see Microsoft leading the way with reparability and upgradability! This will be a key feature I will be looking for in future purchases.

This was really awesome, thank you for this helpful video and kudos to Microsoft and the Surface team for making devices much more easier to repair. I hope the next Surface Laptop is about this easier to repair too. I wish the RAM was upgradable, but at least the SSD is. Keep up the great work!

Question - but where can we get parts? My SLS has a fan that is grinding and I'd rather replace it myself than go through warrenty process. That seems like a much better path for Microsoft and myself, but even iFixit says you have to be part of their "Pro" program to get parts and be in wholesale work.

Great video. Biggest challenge for me was that the plastic strip pulled up some of the double sided tape that holds it, which then got all crumpled up. Where do we find replacement tape? Or maybe we can re-stick the strip with some non-permanent glue, like photo glue?

If this is as modular by the end of the video as I’m hoping it is, I may end up looking at more surface devices to replace my programming workstations. This and the Linux subsystem for windows make me very happy as a consumer.

Awesome, bought a SLS last month (I actually wanted a SB4), and now waiting for a hardware iteration for the device.

And where do I get new feet and this other sticker that had to be removed at the beginning?
Better to design your devices in a way that this is not necessary. I don‘t care if any screws are visible on the bottom of the device.
Even MacBooks are accessible without the need to remove some silly stickers first that need to be replaced afterwards.

That's pretty neat! Is there any way to buy genuine replacement parts for the laptop studio? While it's great that a lot of components are modular, it won't do much if you can't buy replacements for them if they ever break.

Thanks for uploading this video. However a disassembly guide really should've been provided earlier considering that many people had no idea about the hidden screws underneath the sticker.

Also where exactly can we buy spare parts? I can't seem to find any after searching through your website.

I think this is the proof that a device can be both repairable and has a premium design
