The series "Vintage Jazz Bargains" (formerly titled "Five Under Twenty") continues with a fifth instalment. Allan recommends five affordable early pressings of records from the classic age of jazz on vinyl: great music which won't break the bank.

Records discussed include:

00:01:32 Lou Levy Quartet - Jazz In Four Colors (RCA Victor, 1956)
00:03:37 Buddy Collette's Swinging Shepherds (EmArcy, 1958)
00:05:14 Mel Tormé Sings Fred Astaire (Bethlehem, 1957)
00:07:48 Shelly Manne & His Men Play Peter Gunn (Contemporary, 1959)
00:10:04 Booker Ervin - Lament For Booker Ervin (Enja, 1975)

Please make a video explaining why some records are deemed collectible and others are not. For example, I never find Miles Davis in the discount bins, but find tons of Erroll Garner

That Booker Ervin record is a great call. Even the og’s don’t go for much more than $20 last time I checked

You have really helped me open up to west coast jazz, which I greatly appreciate. However, I will be looking up that Booker Ervin record first!

Great content and I like the new title. I had for many years suspected that the Shelly Manne album was worth picking up but this episode finally brought me over the line and I snapped up a vg+ copy this morning on eBay at $10 as I suspected this episode would drive up prices 200-300% in no time. And I was also happy to discover that I already have the Booker Ervin on my shelves which I had forgotten all about most likely because I had acquired it when I was buying so many records that I couldn’t find time to listen to them. Sitting next to it was an Elvin Jones Enja release that I look forward to rediscovering as well. All that to say thanks for the episode.

You could add to this program the Verve twofers 1976 2500 series. They are all very good, normally around $10 +/-. Nice discovery.

Noticed the seam split. To fix, use binding tape from the inside- fold and insert using a thin metal or wood ruler. Saw this method on Dr. John's channel.

Have you concluded the Voice of America episodes? Dillion at Noble Records bought and sold many.

I have been enjoying your videos lately and find them entertaining and informative. I was wondering if you have ever mentioned the wonderful and relevantly unknown pianist Jessica Williams. Unfortunately, most of her best work was released on CD only although she did have a couple of vinyl releases one of which has recently been done by Acoustic Sounds. Supposedly called one of the best pianists by no less than Dave Brubeck, recognition or her talents was hurt by her relocation to the west coast. Some of her music featured Leroy Vinegar on bass and almost all of it is wonderful imo. Anyway, thanks for your awesome work here.

Loving your subliminal messaging (kinda) in this vid Allan - strange times indeed. That Buddy Collette album cover is another level of wow 😂 Agree that early Tormé was superb. Cheers :)

Very cool suggestions. The only one I have is Shelly Manne’s Peter Gunn album, which I agree is excellent! Victor Feldman’s bass marimba playing is very hip! You’ve whetted my appetite for the Mel Torme-Marty Paich collaboration. On the hunt for that!

Hello Allan and thanks again for your excellent suggestions. Would it be possible for you to do a video on your top 20 books about jazz ? I see that you have quite a big selection in the background and it would be interesting to hear your thoughts and opinions on some of these. All the best, Paul.

My Dad left me that Peter Gunn / Manne record and Pops had great taste in Jazz! I’ll get it on the platter soon, thanks to your review.

Maybe Paul Horn’s look is one with a premonition from the future of a threat that in 67 years, Canada will become the 51st State🇺🇸 (Cue the Lightening Strike Sound Effect And evil muah-haha laugh)

In general, the AllMusic reviews of Jazz records are mostly BS. i don't know why they claim any authority, there writers know next to nothing.
