The series "Five Under Twenty" continues with a fourth instalment. Allan recommends five affordable early pressings of records from the classic age of jazz on vinyl: great music which won't break the bank.

Records discussed include:

00:01:56 Jazz Crusaders - Lighthouse '69 (Pacific Jazz, 1969)
00:04:39 Jimmy Giuffre - Tangents In Jazz (Capitol, 1956)
00:06:30 Les McCann Ltd. - In San Francisco (Pacific Jazz, 1961)
00:08:24 Cannonball Adderley Quintet - Plus (Riverside, 1962)
00:10:30 Herbie Mann - Do The Bossa Nova With Herbie Mann (Atlantic, 1962)

Really enjoying this series thank you! A couple budget greats I often see are Ramsey Lewis' The In Crowd and Cannonball Adderley Mercy Mercy Mercy. Cheers!

Thanks for this Allan! I’ve recently started building on the jazz side of my vinyl collection specifically looking for underrated gems and cheap pressings. This was the exact video I’ve been looking for 🙏🙏🙏

Hello Allan-- Thank You for another excellent Post, your several "Series" of Jazz are much appreciated! Just a note on "Adderley-Plus", what led me to this LP was Victor Feldman, a favorite Vibes Musician of mine. After listening to this album I had to look twice at the Cover to be sure this was actually a Cannonball release! The Band is beyond the "Straight-Ahead Jazz" of previous Adderley releases, from start to finish everyone is in top form. And the Feldman tack you mentioned is my favorite, but the entire album is simply pure listening pleasure! Keep up the good work Allan, your Posts are a Jazz education, spot on selections and fantastic "capsule reviews"! Take Care, until the next one!

Great series. Here's a recommendation that fits the criteria: 1972's "Constellation" by Sonny Stitt on the Cobblestone label. Not a ton of hard bop being done by '72, but this one smokes. Check it out.

Excellent presentation as I always learn something from you. Twenty dollars or less is my price point. Speaking from the Midwest USA, there are many of these gems available at this time and from what I find, grab them while you can as you see them once and then not for another 20 years.

Great picks, Allan. Thanks for the tips. Particularly interested in the Les McCann cut. His live album the following year (in NYC) is one of my all time favourite live albums. Includes Stanley Turrentine and Blue Michell in the line-up. Keep up the good work!

I’m a big Jimmy Giuffre fan. A few years back I pursued and acquired a lot of his works. Tangents is a favorite. I call it chamber jazz. It’s very well recorded, with a great sound stage. Drummer Artie Anton is little-known, but kind of a gas!

I don't know any of these albums, Allan. But I shall certainly look out for them. One album which (inexplicably) sells for next to nothing is 'JJ!' by J.J. Johnson. It seems trombonists were never considered to be among the crème de la crème in jazz.🤔
