NASA’s Opportunity rover has had a rough few weeks recently.

Thanks to a massive dust storm engulfing most of the red planet, NASA's Deep Space Network has not heard a peep from Opportunity.

Sorry, but I believe the mission is almost certainly over, as we are now in January and the Rover still has not
Been heard from. But rather than mourning its demise we should celebrate a Rover which lasted much longer
Than originally anticipated, took many more photos and collected much more scientific data than
Originally thought possible. RIP Opportunity, Opportunity will always have a very special place in the history of the exploration of Mars
And will not be forgotten.

It had an opportunity of a bright future. It wasted it

I'm curious how NASA has budgeted for these continued missions. Originally slated for 3 months, when did they decide to allocate resources for continued support of these rovers?

What if simply a layer of sand will block the panels from catching sunlight?
