Harmonic minor scale guitar positions are important to learn if we want to nail soloing over chord changes in minor keys. Some say the harmonic minor scale is the 2nd most important scale.

What's the most important scale to learn for improvising?
That's right, the major scale.
What's the second most important scale to learn for improvising?
Well, some would say it's the harmonic minor scale.
That might be surprising because we usually don't think of the harmonic minor scale as very useful until we really understand its application.
In a minor key, when the V chord is major (or dominant 7), it's coming from the harmonic minor scale.
That means that if we want to NAIL that V chord when improvising over it on the guitar, then we want to use the harmonic minor scale.
And that type of V chord is in nearly every minor key song!
It's also in TONS of major key songs (via minor chords getting "tonicized")
So yeah, harmonic minor is a handy (and necessary) scale to learn for nailing changes when improvising on the guitar.

I typically don’t comment on guitar lesson videos, but this one, as well as your other videos deserve massive praise. I never was motivated to learn scales. I finally decided it was time. Months ago I watched your scale video on natural Major and Minor scales, learned them using this method. Took awhile but it eventually stuck. Now I can solo outside of the pentatonic boxes I was stuck in. I enjoy neoclassical music and came to your page to find this video. This method works if you out in a little bit of time. And i manage to land on the roots when i am playing because it’s hardwired into my brain now. Great lesson!

Sometimes I employ the 'Hyper Mode' concept / a 5th below Tonic pass the Tonic to a 4th above Tonic, for interest.

The one string approach gives such a physical and spatial feel for the scale that you can internalize it easily. Playing scales vertically (across the neck) makes that very hard to feel.
