Around here (Michigan) we spray those at dusk, that away they are all in the nest. If you spray during the day some will return and keep the nest going.

The last time I bought wasp spray it was a foam and it really does a good job keeping the wasps from moving around or leaving the nest before they meet their maker. Your Maverick has really turned into a talker, he's adorable!

Really glad little Mav didn’t get stung! I used to run after my Dad on his riding mower and he went through a ditch where a nest was and I ran right through it and they lit me up. That’s deserving of a Dadgumit!
