Apparently James Baxter gave a masterclass to the animators on how to animate horses for the show, which definitely helps the smoothness!

I love how they sorta tackle serious topics too like PTSD and even depression and suicide. It’s not too too crazy in the face, but just enough that you can understand the lesson they’re trying to teach

the theme for the Nowhere King is literally terrifying

So excited you enjoyed the show - was hoping you’d cover it! I was a Production Assistant on the show and can confidently say that the team had as much fun making it as you did watching it! :D

For everyone in the comments talking about how this show was animated: i animated on this show. It was animated by Mercury Filmworks (where i worked) and Red Dog Culture House in Korea. Red Dog did all the “real world” anime looking sequences and mercury did all the centaurs and centaur world

The real world stuff was hand animated

else was puppet rigs. All the centaurs. All the crazy stuff. Its all rigs. Rigs are very good now. You can do pretty much everything with rigs.

Not only was the show a really refreshing take on the strengths and pitfalls of both optimism and cynicism, using a single shared trauma to explore the way different people adapt to pain and how it can be healthy for them to let in some of the opposite element to help them grow past that pain, but also the soundtrack slaps HARD, the idea of a Horse who saw themselves mainly as a vehicle for Rider exploring themselves as a self actualized character with complexity and beauty, and James Baxter himself taught the crew how to smoothly animate realistic horses for this one. It's dark, it's silly, it'll make you cry and sing. It's a really good time! Even if you don't prescribe to the cotton candy aesthetic, I highly recommend giving this one an honest go.

One of the things I like about the backstory of the world as a contrast to Adventure Time, the dark backstory isn't some event in the distant past but rather something that happened within the lifetime of the characters that the world is still recovering from.
A lot of the physical damage might have been undone, but the psychological and emotional damage is still prevalent.

the show is such tonal whiplash but dang I couldn't look away from it and watched the whole season XD

I really didn’t care for the fart jokes, which I’m usually fine with. The more adult jokes snuck in were golden and reminded me a lot of Adventure Time. By the end of the season, I got really invested and I want more! Most songs are great, even though they’re mostly nonsense, which is the point.

The animation is so smooth though, it’s very nice. Nice to see some not low budget computer puppets.

I love how in the same episode Durpleton has a side plot about fart jokes, right next to Wammawinks village being killed and becoming an orphan

"Hush now, hide, all you little ones
Rush now, into the middle of nowhere
Singing and laughter will die

Dreamless sleep, follows the Nowhere King
When his kingdom comes, darkness is nigh

Quiet, crawl to the in-between
Silent, secretive feeling
Of fearsome hatred that reaches the skies

You will bring joy to the Nowhere King
When he sees the light leaving your eyes~"

The fact that it's so fluidly animated makes it an auto win

It's a cartoony silly show about overcoming grief and accepting changes around you and within yourself... and it's a musical! It's a fucking masterpiece!

"It sounds like someone's being murdered!" "No, that sounds different..."

We NEED a season two, where it can focus on more detailed backstories. Probably, they are gonna focus on Wammawink. Since we saw Llamataurs fighting in Beartaur’s table top

This show is a masterpiece, at first I assumed it to just be an annoying randomness show... But as soon as one of the episodes has that creepy lullaby at the end teasing the darkness to come, I was hooked!

It's so obvious that they had a HUGE budget for this show. The animation is so good and I literally listen to the songs on repeat on spotify. At first I thought it was just a silly show but it's so, so damn good... and all the characters are so lovable. 10/10 would recommend.

I binged the whole show, I loved it, enjoyed a lot of the songs and some of them are wonderfully deep and beautiful. I've been recommending it to my friend groups

I got Adventute Time vibes from this show, and persuaded my girlfriend to watch like 2 episodes with me-- we watched it all in one night. Did you know that Lea Salonga, the singing voice of Mulan is in this too? Flula Borg, Josh Radnor, Fred Armisen-- there's a really solid cast of jokers here. Kimiko Glenn also is getting more attention now with this series, she has a great voice.
