Centaurworld | 'What You Need' (no dialogue) [Subtitles]

The Tree Shaman's song "What You Need" from season 1 episode 4 of Netflix's Centaurworld. This is not the soundtrack version, but the version with First Aid Kit voicing the Shaman Trees.

I edited the intro from the soundtrack version over the intro from the actual episode to cut out the dialogue from Horse. The vocals are all still from First Aid Kit.

What I need is for this song to be longer 😍

I think its interesting that during the song, the shamans brought a dead tree back to life with their powers. Right in front of Wammawink.

Wamawink's face throughout this makes such painful sense upon the re-watch, to stand before those who told her as a tiny child that she did not "need" her family brought back to life

Alternative title:
Wammawink dissociates for a solid minute as she's forced to relive her childhood trauma.

They aren't cruel out of malice, they're just not compassionate. They are very, very wise and can see things objectively, on a level that people with emotions can't. Their definition of "need" seems to be a rather literal one too, where it's something most optimal for progress, not comfortable. They evaluate what's wrong with someone and provide the tools for them to rectify, because it's what they need, which they clarify only sometimes aligns with what they want. Wammawink absolutely wanted her family to come back, but the tree shamans didn't grant that wish. Why? It's not what she needed. Why? The village was destroyed by war, having them come back to a scene of destruction only ensures their return is miserable or at least uncertain. Not only that, but these things do happen, unfortunately, and for Wammawink to just wish everyone back to life isn't something people can just do normally. She'd have no chance to properly grieve or grow, since the problem seemingly undoes itself. Keeping as many alive as possible is the desired outcome, but not the needed one. Wammawink didn't deserve that tragedy, but it helped her become what she is.

Horse was shown a vision of the shamans rejecting her wishes because until this point she had been dismissive and rude toward Wammawink and her disposition. It shows her how devoted to helping Horse she is, willing to revisit the site of her biggest tragedy and the two who refused to undo it. Just for Horse. Horse needed to see it to appreciate the sacrifices and good will of Wammawink.

I love that Horse just decides "Ya know what? No. You guys are full of *shit"* by this episode's end. Super cathartic.

Shamans: *reviving a tree during their musical number*

Wammawink: "And I took that personally."

Wamawinks expression kills me inside, poor baby knew what she wanted but it seems fate forced her to need something else 😭

I still don't think the tree shamans were in the wrong, at least with this group. Wammawink's case was sad and seemed cruel, yes, but without going out and starting her own herd, she'd have never met her friends, left her safety bubble, or improved her magic. Ched's case is pretty obvious: He needed to walk in Horse's shoes for a little while, to try and understand her better...he failed, but the point remains.

Meanwhile, Durpleton just needed a bit of self-confidence (albeit in the weirdest way possible), and Horse needed to better understand Wammawink's predicament, and needed to empathize with her more.

Hey I just realized that there were 5 shamans and 5 stages of grief, and all through that season Horse had acted more and more depressed until the Pier. Like when meeting Waterbaby she was in denial about being separated from Rider and her emotions, the trees chaman are all about bargaining, she got pretty angry during the trial at her tail and the moletaures aren’t that chill either with we don’t suffer any fools bit. Especially Comfortable Doug. She then hit her lowest point after Johnny Teatime’s competition and her complete transformation and it’s inside the whaletaure shaman that she finally accepted her changes and that she forgot Rider’s face.

Also other things linking denial and Waterbaby is that she always interact with people in denials : Wammawick, Horse and crazy cool older lady whose name I forgot.

I’m probably grasping at straw here! And maybe my analysis is completely wrong because in the end her piece was the last one acquired ! So in this new order:

The trees : Denial (with the theme of what you want/what you need)
The moletaure shaman : Bargain (they have to negotiate for their freedom)
Johnny Teatime : Anger (Julius and Horse got so fed up during that episode and Johnny was so terrifying once he got pissed off)
The Whaletaure : She’s depressed the people inside her are depressed everyone is depressed !
Waterbaby/Wammawick : Wammawick is her student and she’s the one to pull Horse out of depression, so I’m putting Best girl with best Shaman. But both of them shows a lot more of clarity about what needs to be done on multiple occasions. For exemple sending Horse on her journey, avoiding the Taurenado or just the fight with the Nowhere King. So yeah I’m maybe overreaching but it kinds of works no?

Just once I want someone in a fantasy story to encounter a wish granter who “gives you what you need not what you want” and calls them out for never actually helping people when they could

When you look at it from a plant perspective, to them, 'what you need' is the things that will make you grow into the best version of yourself. So they'll give you what they think will make you grow into that. That tree they revived probably wasn't dead yet, they just used a little magic to give it what it needed in order to grow. They see it in terms of the grand scheme of things. To them, they thought that Wammawink needed to grow past the tragedy that happened to her in order to be the best person she could be. In the grand scheme of things, it was for the best they let her go on to figure out how to grow past it... however, that doesn't make it the kindest thing, either.

First Aid Kit.. Ahhhh Beautiful music as always. They know what they are doing. Though i will be honest i didnt expect them to play a part in a cartoon. Let alone one like this.

They’re the opposite of the whale shaman who gives people what they want (peace and oblivion) at the expense of what they need for personal growth. The trees are about facilitating that growth despite how painful it is.

Lyrics:

Our roots reach down, our branches rise
From sky to ground, our wooden eyes
Have gazed upon desires, hope, and greed

But to each soul who walks this way
A tree disclaimer we must say
We give not what you want - but what you need

For the greenery has always seen the reason and the rhyme
But we’ve had nothing but time since we’ve been seeds
And you might believe you know your truth
But truth can oft' be lies

And you might just be surprised by what you need
What you need, la-la-la-la
What you need

Oh, you might just be surprised by what you need
What you need, la-la-la-la
What you need

Oh, you might just be surprised
By what you need

This scene is when I briefly fell in love with Centaurworld. The themes, the harmony, the melody, and the animation all just blend together into what is possibly my favorite musical number in an animation.

Dude I _thought_ this sounded like First Aid Kit! Imagine my joy at seeing their names in the credits. I love their music. I don't understand why it's not them on the official soundtrack.

The Tree Shamans must be the wisest Shamans because they might be 100’s of years old. Trees take a long time to grow.

Thanks, I really loved this song when I was watching the series and I was searching for it on Spotify just to find that they didn't upload this version... Hope that they add it in the future

Honestly, I can completely understand why people dislike the Tree shamans so much, like, okay yeah Wamma didn't need her herd revived but she sure could have used some comfort in those times, their apathetic deal is def bad points for them, unless ofc they didn't console her because she needed to be so utterly sad and alone so she could eventually find people that felt like her in those dark times so they could all be a family, but that's speculation.

Their "give what you need" deal does make sense tho, but their character flaw is probs they let that get too in the way of their judgement of a situation, who knows, their voices are freaking great tho
