RIPLEY’S DEBATE WATCHES
Jaeger-LeCoultre
The debate starts strongly with not just one watch but rather an entire brand. JLC is the watchmaker’s watchmaker and the brand behind the calibers powering many of the leading Swiss watch industry’s most iconic timepieces. From the Reverso to the Heliotourbilon, the brand follows its own path rather than current trends.
Omega Constellation
It’s easy to forget about the Constellation with other smash hits from Omega, such as the Speedmaster Moon Watch, James Bond Seamaster, and DeVille. However, the Constellation is one of the brand’s most enduring and oldest models, with roots dating to the early 1950s. It deserves more love with its timeless design codes.
JUSTIN’S DEBATE WATCHES
Rolex Sea-Dweller
The Sea-Dweller wasn’t as popular as the Submariner when the collection debuted. Part of the reason was that it was viewed as more of an extreme dive watch. Collectors didn’t want to pay the premium for the Sea-Dweller over the Submariner, the latter of which had substantial water resistance in its own right. The Submariner in the 1960s boasted a 200-meter depth rating versus the Sea-Dweller with a 610-meter depth rating. Today, the collection lives in the shadows of the even more water-resistant Deepsea and its little brother, the Submariner, and is often looked over by the modern collector.
Justin argues that it’s an excellent option. It has similar aesthetics to the Submariner but the extra appeal of being a watch that not very many collectors have.
Rolex Milgauss
The Rolex Milgauss is getting more attention now that the collection has been discontinued. Still, it remains an underrated watch for Justin because it isn’t inherently sporty or dressy and features the quirky orange lightning bolt seconds hand. The collection was released in the 1950s, earning its name after its resistance up to 1,000 gauss. While this level of anti-magnetism was impressive enough when it came to market, it has since been surpassed by other brands that tout greater resistance up to 15,000 gauss.
