I did this with a 2015 27" iMac I got off Facebook Marketplace. It's a gorgeous display, and I love watching 4K videos and doing high-res photo work on it as part of my M1 Mac setup. Saved close to a $1000 (from buying a Studio Display) while still have an Apple-logo'd display on my desk. Can't recommend it enough. The process isn't scary once you get the iMac carefully disassembled, and I've thought about making a couple more and re-selling them.

I hate to say, both your and Luke's projects are flawed. The board's you are both using are only compatible with DP 1.2, not DP 1.4. DP 1.2 does not support 5K with a single cable. You need to use two to get 5K. So both of you are running your displays at 4K. The more expensive R1811 boards support DP1.4 5K with a single cable. It runs at $299.

If you do it again, also put in a Mac Mini M1 board in that same 5k iMac display.

Shame to lose the speakers in the conversion as the iMac's speakers are pretty good - esp when compared to the Mac mini (or Mac Studio which is terrible). Any way of keeping the speakers?

I've got the shell, the display, and the R1811 board, just trying to figure out my electrical connections and what type of video cable to run to a MacBook Air M2

My only complaint is that a 2014 i7 imac is still very functional in its own right, at least for simpler things like web browsing and office/school tasks. Had I discovered how clean that was inside, I would have put it back together and found it another purpose (right after updating the drive, at least). That's still my sisters primary home computer for the family. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to do this if someone had an example with a fried motherboard that was going to end up in a trash pile. I saw the original project before your video, I might pick up one of those boards just to set aside to use down the road.

The other day I was about to drive a couple hours to buy a Studio Display 27” 5K for $600 in facebook marketplace. The seller ended up selling to someone else before I started driving there.
Well, yesterday (12/11/24) I found one in my local pawnshop for $750. Without much optimism I offered $500 and they replied YES! Now, I enjoy the most beautiful and expensive monitor I’ve ever had 🙂 true story ☝️

How does it function in terms of colour accuracy? I don't really understand the technical issues involved, but presumably the OS and monitor circuit board have to understand each other.... I guess standard colour profiling will work?

I use the same iMac 5k for all sorts of heavy computing stuff. I do have an internal ssd but you could always just have replaced the hdd.

Do you have to disassemble the screen to find out the exact model number? THose boards are hard to find online too
