Alternatively, if you don't have purple to mix yellow shadow, I did use black and added red to balance out the greenish effect.

Black pigment naturally has a blue hue. Something to keep in mind for mixing.
Mixing black and red basically gives a puple-ish black color.

I am taking an extreme point now:

Never darken your colors with black. No shadow is black. This is the reason why most of the slpchop jobs looks so bad btw. Black is no color. Use it as a primer. Then avoid it.

Same with white and brightening up.
You will just screw up your saturation. So unless you do it on purpose

That is a good tipe, I wonder if it will work with Ocher as well?
