In this video, we test to see if you need a Cloudlifter with the Shure SM7B and TC Helicon GoXLR. You typically need a Cloudlifter for one of two reasons:

1) Your interface doesn't supply enough gain.
2) Your interface supplies too much noise at the desired gain level.

We found that you don't need a Cloudlifter with the Shure SM7B and GoXLR.

Honestly it really depends on use. I've had the GoXLR and ShureSM7B for about a year with no Cloudlifter. It worked fine when I was streaming, but it was absolutely awful for recording vocals in songs. I finally caved this week and bought a Cloudlifter and not only does the vocals in my songs sound significantly better, but even the stream quality has improved somewhat.

Basically, if you only want it for streaming and nothing more, you can get by without the Cloudlifter, but otherwise you definitely need to add it

I run a cloud lifter anyway, it take stress off the preamp simple, run anything flat out and it wears faster... great video and 100% worth adding a cloud lifter imo

hey Jordan and everyone at Kettner Creative! First off, I love your videos...well formatted, great delivery and very well done videos. I've listened to most of them in my search for a good sounding mic/mixer combination and your channel has been extremely helpful. I would like to say one thing about the recommendation here. I have this EXACT setup, and I followed the instructions in the other video about EQ\other settings for this mic\mixer and I could not get my voice to sound clear with the SM7B AT ALL. My friends kept telling me I sounded like I was sick or something. No matter what I tried I just didn't sound right. I was about to give up on the SM7B and try something else when I decided to bite the bullet and get a mic activator. And wow...what a difference! I sound as clean and clear as I have been wanting to the entire time. I *think* that's because I have a soft but low voice. My voice doesn't' carry very well at all and I had to turn the gain up to 69-70 to get into that "good" range with the goxlr. The activator allowed me to turn the gain down to a "normal" level and still be heard. So if anyone is like me and just can't get these two to play nice...despite all the settings you've tried. Get that mic activator...it's worth it!

if you've made it this far, thank you for reading my book

For general streaming and YouTube gameplay voiceover recordings it's more than enough without it, I know because I've been using both together, and without the cloudlifter as well and the difference was really negligible. If you're using it for professional music applications or a podcast without any background music, I'd get a fethead instead to save yourself more money and you get more clean gain. Another bonus for the fethead is that you only require 1 cable after you've connected it to the preamp instead of the cloudlifter requiring 2, which could even help lower noise floor.

Can you make a video on the best settings when using the SM7B with a cloudlifter plugged into the GoXLR?

I just got a Go XLR Mini today in addition to a Shure SM7B. I am also building a new PC which will have a a SoundBlaster AE-5 Plus sound card. I'm wondering if there will be any downside to passing the audio output from the sound card through the Go XLR Mini and then to my Sennheiser PC38x headset. I am looking forward to the DAC and 7.1 virtualization the sound card will provide and I'm hoping I won't loose any fidelity by doing this. I assume I would be best served by using an optical cable between the two. Any input is appreciated.

Does that also apply for the TC Helicon GoXLR Mini?

It's still louder with the cloud lifter even after you dialed it back, it's not possible to make a comparison from the video really.
