DIY CRT Oscilloscope project from the 1980s

Here's an extra video to finish off the year. This is a bit of nostalgia for me as it was a college project and still a teenager at the time. It was the only way to get an oscilloscope for home use. A few years later I had acquired a proper scope or two and this project was forgotten, stored the attic, until now. The book I used to base the project was ‘How to Build Your Own Solid-State Oscilloscope’ by F.G. Rayer. By any standard this is a very basic service CRO with no real calibration and AC coupling. It still proved useful in basic fault finding at the time.

I love the fact that you had the foresight to make a manual (very professional even by today's standards). I'm sure I've still got a few of those books in the loft. There was a surplus electrical shop in the Saltmarket near what used to be known as Paddy's Market in the 70's we used to hang out that stocked a huge range of kit.

Well made oscilloscope! Back in the day i had couple attempts to build my own oscilloscope from scrap using old CRT from 70's, when i was young with almost no money but with strong willing and lot of free time. First time it was build using transistors, second is with vaccuum tubes, but not finaly done... Years later i just buy used oscope and almost finally satisfied with it :)
P.S. Sorry for my english

I had the same scope but built more in line with the book design.

FANTASTIC thanks so much for showing this absolute gem of your past, even if it may have took some gental but repetitive persuasion 🤣🤣🤣 it's really really cool you built your own scope in the 80s....

I would be interested in a detailed break down of this or even another build but with current parts.

It's got a z input so you could easily build a composite to xyz board and watch video on it😁

Maybe turn it into a clock or curve tracer etc? Kind of a shame to put it back in the attic.

I imagine the parts would have cost $500 to $1000 back then .
