In part 1 of 2 of this video series, I will be building this boarded or 6 board chest using only hand tools. This blanket chest is a great hand tool woodworking project. It has simple joinery and is ultimately nailed together. This is a great skill building project if you are interested in traditional woodworking. In this video, I will get the rough boards tried and true, panels glued up and start working on the end boards.
Here is a link to the Paint I am using for this chest
Here is a link to the hinges I am using
Here is a link to the video where I tune up an old handsaw that I use on this project

What a wonderful instructional video. What an inspiration for anyone hesitant about using hand tools to complete a project. Even more impressive when the viewer scans over a backdrop of high end machines in your shop that you leave idle as you create the sounds of sharp steel on wood and, with sweat, get machine like results with handtools. All to often, we look to power tools to create projects when saws, chisels and planes are more appropiate and require less fiddling and set up time to keep a project rolling. Just get on with it! Thanks for posting and letting us in your workshop to watch a skilled craftsman at work.

Could you explain the spring joint with the two boards? Its my first time hearing about it and it seems counterintuitive to me.
Putting stress on the boards and forcing them together with just glue, seems like only a matter of time before they come apart.

Awesome job. I like your style and straightforward approach to video editing. Not over produced. I like that

You mentioned filing new teeth into one of your saws. A couple of years ago, I stumbled upon a rusted 10ppi crosscut Disston that someone had modified into a swayback. I cleaned it up, cut four inches off of the toe, and filed it rip. It's one of my favorite saws to use.

Excellent video! I do enjoy watching hand tools exclusively being used as it reminds me of how things use to be made.

Good stuff Dave!

Hats off to you, man. You take everything from the hand tools, the funny part (joinery) and the tough one (milling).
Nice display of hand tools technique.

Nice start to the project David. Man, dimensioning all those boards by hand is a lot of work. I was getting tired just watching....
