I use the 2.1 cable in my current setup and have previously used the 1.4 cable, I will earn a small commission from these links at no extra cost to you!

DisplayPort 2.1 launched in 2022 and is the latest version of the DisplayPort interface standard, while DisplayPort 1.4 launched in 2016 is the most commonly used previous version. They differ in several aspects, including bandwidth, resolution, refresh rate, and features. In this video were going to look at what separates them and whether it's a big upgrade. Please do subscribe if you haven't already, it really helps this small channel grow.

One of the main differences between DisplayPort 2.1 and 1.4 is their bandwidth. DisplayPort 2.1 offers a higher maximum bandwidth of 77.4 Gbps compared to DisplayPort 1.4's maximum bandwidth of 32.4 Gbps. This allows DisplayPort 2.1 to support higher resolutions, refresh rates, and colour depths.

Another difference is their maximum resolution and refresh rate. DisplayPort 2.1 can support up to 8K resolution (7680 x 4320 pixels) at 60 Hz or 4K resolution at 144 Hz. DisplayPort 1.4, on the other hand, can support up to 8K resolution at 30 Hz or 4K resolution at 120 Hz. This means that DisplayPort 2.1 can handle higher-resolution displays and smoother gameplay than DisplayPort 1.4.

Finally, DisplayPort 2.1 also supports Multi-Stream Transport (MST) and HBR3, which allow for multiple displays to be daisy-chained together and for high-bandwidth audio and video signals to be transmitted simultaneously over a single cable. These features are not available in DisplayPort 1.4.
In conclusion, DisplayPort 2.1 is a significant improvement over DisplayPort 1.4 in terms of bandwidth, resolution, refresh rate, and features. It is capable of supporting higher-resolution displays, smoother gameplay, and more advanced features than DisplayPort 1.4, making it a better choice for high-end displays and gaming setups.

You're a life saver, recently got myself a 4k 144hz display that Sadly goes black screen a few seconds often every time I use an OpenGL Application, only to realize my version was not made to tolerate high color depth. Thank you ❤️

As of this writing Dell is offering Display Port 1.4. As with TV's, the higher you go on resolution the less you will be able to utilize it. Standard broadcast signals DO NOT support higher resolution so spending the money on fancy graphics is a waste because you'll never see those higher resolutions. Unless your into gaming and money is not the object your eyes will hardly see the difference. Some may argue they can, but the ability to receive super high resolution is limited by device and signal. Be happy with a lesser standard until a higher standard is adopted mainstream.

There is one question im asking myself now...

If my graphics card + monitor both use display port 1.4

But I want to use / I use a display port 2.0 cable, does it still work?
Or whether the graphics card or monitor, one of them has to be display port 2.0 to work with "downwards compatibility" ?

What I dont get is that I have the new 1440p 360hz oled from alienware but it only has DP 1.4 🤔 I have a 2.1 cable connected to it though and Im just hoping it's working 🤷‍♂️ It feels smooth but Im starting to wonder if it could be smoother.
