What settings should the drill be on for drilling holes? Hammer, drill?

Just thought to test those captive nuts that sink into wood giving option to secure with metric screws to my homemade CNC. Tried to drill through plywood and got quite nasty backside on my test piece. I was wondering how I'd get nicer surfaces. Tried to check YT and got this good video about the basics. Heck my grandpa told me about this multiple times as kid. Facepalm...

Great video mate. Helps a great deal. Can I ask how one can drill a hole in a cupboard made of mdf with laminate on it? Its one of those where u place a plug in it to hold a piece of laminated wood on it and this becomes a shelf if you know what I mean. I need the shelf to be much higher but then I have to make my own holes on the side of the cupboard :-(
