Patriotism and Nationalism, they are literally synonyms Paul. What we have is a problem with definitions, mainly how Nationalism as a word has been demonized lately. The only difference between the words is the later can be exclusionary, but that says nothing to what extent and or where appropriate. What a minority of people do with the label is irrelevant to what it actually means. Neither automatically implies superiority. Neither has to be a movement. Nationalism is not Jingoism, or something like that. Nationalism also does not automatically imply exclusion of minorities. I'm a minority in America, I've never been excluded from anything here, including citizenship.

Currently there's this idea that Trump, and or his government, wants nothing to do with people outside of the US, or minorities for that matter. They wrongly, by definition, call him a racist over this. Yet if the people saying these things had a clue (I actually suspect the likes of CNN actually do) they would know that Trump's criteria to live in the US is legal citizenship. No matter how many times he says it, it's as if he never did. Obama had the same criteria, same as, Bush, ect. Two of these people made an exception, Trump want's to too, but currently he can't get the right people to get anything done on it.

I do not know why it is assumed Trump is trying to keep brown people out just because they're brown people, or why people don't know, or chose to ignore the definition of racism. What I do know is Trump's criteria for immigration is the same as mine, the same as my families, my friends, and all our recent presidents, yet somehow he's an evil bastard for upholding the same laws and principles.

I can't even get anyone to actually tell me what exactly Trump has done to make them think this stuff, something specific, and all anyone who holds this position, belief rather, do is repeat back the rhetoric coming from the media and or that of many on the further left, often without a clue as to what the accusatory words they're using mean. He's just a racist white supremacist because people believe he is, just like God is real because people say so. No evidence.

I've been thinking about what you said. This is a thought provoking vid. Decided to come back and listen again.
First I want to say, Please forgive me for passing over that important news about your family member in my earlier comment. Glad she is going to be alright.
I was feeling somewhat light hearted when I wrote my first comment early today and then,
I read the news today, oh boy.
You are correct, those words do not mean the same thing. There is a difference and its important to note that difference.
I'm a patriot. I'm not a nationalist. Just wanted to leave no doubt about where I stand.
Peace. : )

The Sneetches! : D Excellent lesson in that little story.
Eon: The time it has taken for the humans of our world to crawl out of the mud, stand up, and walk, and band together in groups.
Nanosecond: The time it will take for the humans of our world to unite as one when the space aliens show up.

I've lived in other countries and feel that nationalism would never be a fit for me. I hope we are wise enough to have a one world govt someday.

Diversity is only a strength if there is a shared mutual goal. If diversity means pocket boroughs of each nationality that immigrates, you're looking at conflict instead of the promotion of your countries best interests. When folks immigrate, and they don't share the will to promote the values of your country, they become an issue. This is where the "othering" in nationalism stems from, the view that some folks don't actually share your values and your country's best interests at heart. Take Muslims for instance. In Britain fully a 3rd of them believe homosexuality should be a crime. That's not a British value. That's a problem.

I know you’re in England but I’m still a little sad you didn’t address Scottish nationalism and the SNP. I’m a independence supporter myself, but also pro EU with it. I guess what you’re calling patriotism is what I’d call civic nationalism.

Eh, this turned into a ramble with no real point,
