NHC Director Warns Florida Residents Of Hurricane Helene's Impacts Along Big Bend Coast

The time to prepare for the onslaught of Hurricane Helene is essentially over as the monster storm continues to gain strength and sets its sights on Florida’s Big Bend region, where it will unleash a potentially "unsurvivable" 20-foot storm surge, catastrophic hurricane-force winds and flooding rain.

"The winds are slowly increasing. We've got both NOAA and the Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters in the storm now," National Hurricane Director Dr. Michael Brennan told FOX Weather on Thursday. "If you look at the radar, you can start to see the eye just showing up now on the edge of the radar."

Nearly the entire state of Florida is under some sort of tropical weather alert, with Tropical Storm Warnings extending hundreds of miles inland into Georgia and the Carolinas, including Atlanta.

"The impacts of this storm are on an enormous scale and are going to extend over multiple states all the way up into the Carolinas and southern Appalachians -- the storm surge, the hurricane and tropical storm force winds and the potential for catastrophic rainfall," Brennan added.

Why don't people pay attention to the weather people and just get out of these places. They wait until the very last minute then someone risk their lives to save them. It's this way with every storm.

There are always new people in Florida that have never experienced a hurricane….. and sadly think they are all immortal.. if you are a newer resident please listen to people that have been through this type of storm. I moved here in 1976 and I am not by any means a hurricane expert…. But know some knowledge is better than nothing!!

NOPE! Don't get hung up on the Cat. After all if it's 1 or 2 you are not as likely to have roof damage to if it's high 3 or 4 especially high 4 the winds are 140 mph or higher.

You made a good point. The forward speed makes all the difference in the world. It’s not moving slowly it will be gone in an afterthought. The poor people in the panhandle are going to get it the worst everywhere else is fine. No more fear porn.
