5 Fan Favorite Forsythia Bushes | NatureHills.com

Показать описание
Hey guys, it’s Whit from Nature Hills back at the beginning of the spring season to talk about one of the garden's first flowers we’ll see after winter. Extremely early spring color is the game, Forsythias are the name. I love seeing their yellow flowers because it means warm days aren’t far away. But hey, instead of dragging on like those last few weeks of winter, I’ll jump right into telling you our top 5 forsythia picks.
#5 Gold Tide® Forsythia
Starting off strong with a compact dwarf variety named Gold Tide Forsythia. And as that name suggests, it’ll burst into a tidal wave of gold each spring. You can expect it to stay between 2 and 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. Its smaller size means it would work well as a middle-row planting that won’t cut off the taller foundation plants in the back but will give a lovely backdrop for those front-row short showstoppers. #5 Gold Tide Forsythia - Growing zones 4-8, low-maintenance, with golden flowers that announce the arrival of spring.
#4 Show Off® Sugar Baby® Forsythia
Now, if you’re looking for something even smaller than Gold Tide, I have to suggest Show Off® Sugar Baby® Forsythia. During the earliest days of spring, each branch covers itself in bright yellow florets. Once the flowers fade, you’ll be left with a very attractive compact shrub full of lush green color. Plant them in full sun and watch them grow 18-30 inches tall and wide. #4 Show Off® Sugar Baby® Forsythia - Growing zones 5-8, gorgeous spring and summer color, and great for small spaces.
#3 Sunrise Forsythia
Just like a sunrise shakes off the darkness of night, Sunrise Forsythia offers a beacon of color to announce the end of winter. Talk about a statement piece. Like other forsythia, you’ll find it covered in yellow bell-shaped petals, unlike other forsythia, the leaves emerge and stay a gorgeous dark green that deepens to burgundy in the fall. That’s 3 full seasons of interest. #3 Sunrise Forsythia - Growing zones 4-8, grows 4-5 feet tall and wide, and offers spring, summer, and fall color.
#2 Show Off® Forsythia
If you were eyeing Sugar Baby but wished it would make a larger statement in the landscape, I have the shrub for you. Show Off Forsythia offers the same gorgeous early spring color and dense branching structure as its smaller version but at 3 times the height! It’ll grow 5-6 feet tall and wide, which means there are plenty of branches for you to snip a few off once you see buds and bring them inside to enjoy. #2 Show Off Forsythia - gorgeous sunshine yellow flowers, and dense branches offer privacy, and its large size is great for large landscapes.
#1 Meadowlark Forsythia
Meadowlark gets to be #1 in my book because when we’re all sick of the grays and browns of winter, we all want to see color. The more the merrier and Meadowlark gives you more. I’m talking 8-10 feet top to bottom side to side fully covered in dazzling yellow flowers to announce spring like no other. Use it as a foundation planting next to your house or along your property edge as a privacy screen. Plus, it’s hardy from zones 3-9, meaning it’s an option for most of the United States and it won’t wither in even the coldest upper midwest winters. #1 Meadowlark Forsythia - growing zones 3-9, cold hardy, wide-spreading branches are great for privacy screens, and heralds spring’s arrival with bright yellow blooms.
Have the first spring color on the block with forsythias. Just remember, they bloom on old wood so keep the pruning shears away until after they’re done blooming. Not sure you’re seeing your perfect fit in this list? No problem, we have plenty of other varieties to choose from. Simply head on over to our site’s forsythia category and find the one that’s right for you.
