Forsythia are an old-fashioned favorite with an attractive, upright spreading form. They are excellent, fast-growing shrubs, ideal for hedge planting, mixed borders, and a great backdrop for flowering shrubs and perennials. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist, and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about the benefits of growing Forsythia in your garden. All Forsythia are deer resistant and require very little maintenance but they prefer well-drained soil conditions. Several new varieties are available that grow more compact and are densely covered with flowers from base to tip, including 'Show Off®', 'Show Off Starlett®', and 'Show Off Sugar Baby®'. For your classic look, try 'Lynwood Gold'.

She mentions "deer resistant". Does that mean all of her varieties? I have just about given up on forsythia because of deer.

Thank you for all of this wonderful information! Noelle is ALWAYS amazing as a teacher! Is Forsythia disease resistant and drought tolerant once established?

I have Magical gold in Ca zone 10. So even warmer climates can relish in it's gold color!

Hi Noelle, I planted a PW Show Off last spring, and it’s just now budding out this year. Over the summer it developed one very tall leader branch, much taller than all the other branches. After blooming should I prune back that one branch to the size of the others or should it be left as is?
