His ability to anticipate smashes was beyond this world!

There will never be another Michael Chang. His ability to see where smashes go and work angles on the run is phenomenal. His conditioning is probably his best weapon: he never gets tired?!?

Even in a loss, Chang had us standing and cheering for his ability to do what no one else could.

The way Michael Chang played even back then when the rally speed was much slower than nowadays, it was nearly impossible his playing style could achieved what he did ..every point he won may be 3-4times the energy other required . He won points by not losing points, running all 4 corners .. making passing shots or lobs. In such way if a player can reach several quarter finals already an outstanding achievement ..
he managed to win French Open at 17: reaching another 3 grand slam finals .. being the top 10 player for some 8 years (1989-1997). Huge Respect!

Happy birthday to the brilliant Michael Chang!
At his prime, Chang was simply the fastest tennis player ever. Incredible foot speed, quickness and court coverage that even Nadal will be struggling.
Below are the Facts but no fluke:
The Youngest male Grand Slam Champion at 17 triumphed 1989 Roland Garros.
Chang won a total of 34 top-level professional singles titles, including 1 grand slam, 7 masters.
91/92 back-to-back year-end grand slam cup finalist.
95 year-end masters cup finalist. beating Muster, Courier and No1 Sampras along the way, only lost to Home Favorite Boris Becker.
Winning Indian Wells, Lipton sunshine double in 1992.
The only 3-times Indian Wells Champion(92, 96, 97) before Federer achieved the same feat.
Chang and Sampras are the only 2 players who qualified for year-end masters cup for 6 consecutive year in 90's(92-97).
Chang and Agassi are the only 2 players who won titles in 3 decades(80, 90, and 00)
Chang is also the Unofficial Cincinnati Kid: 4 consecutive final between 93 and 96. Winning 93 & 94 by beating stefan edberg, finalist of 95 & 96(losing to andre agassi).
Chang won his first top-level singles title in 1988 at San Francisco, aged only 16.
Overall Chang is immensely talented and somehow underrated due to his physical disadvantage of height.

Chang won one French open title, but he was much more capable than that, he had no controversies in his carrier, great gentleman, in terms of court coverage I can say the best player

The tennis world was so exciting back then having all kinds of players w totally different style, weapon .. especially fighters like Chang & Hewitt ..the rising of both of them in the late 80s & late 90s in which it was against all odds the way they played could even challenge the top players & won the grand slam .
Also the early decline of both great players made tennis even more fascinating.

Ita amazing when most "experts" try to analyze the state of USA tennis and start to mention great American players recently, they will mention MacEnroe, Connors, Courier, Agassi, Sampras, Isner but they will always leave out Chang, even though he was one of the most consistent players in the Top 10 for most of his career and is youngest French Open winner at 18.

Remember walking into a Reebok or a Nike store when I was a kid and seeing Michael Chang's poster in the tennis section gave me goosebumps.
