What they have that's lacking in the west isn't just the diet; it's sense of community, and a purpose.

I grew up there. Grains of sand the shape of stars, caved lagoons to swim in with blue damsel fish, island hopping, orange pink sunsets, most delicious food in the world, and the gentlest, kindest people.

1:34 this breakfast is insanely rich. There are massive houses and all kinds of fancy cars in my neighborhood, but no you will never find a breakfast around here as rich as this. Unless you have a personal chef cook for you...

So much warmth radiated from those elders. Makes me realize how often cold occidental society really Is and how stressful It Is living In cities.

I love that the food is so creative too and the environment is so beautiful. Great place to live compared to a condominium with no garden and junk food.

SHI-KWA-SA is the most delicious citrus in the world (imo) and you left out the Okinawan purple sweet potato which is different than the one from Moloka’i. The staple fish is Gurukun. When meat is eaten it is more often pork in the form of the Agu, a native breed descended from ancient Chinese trading with Okinawa. The bitter melon known as Karela in India, but called Goya in Okinawa, is very popular during the summer hot season. There are many varieties of vegetables, including sea vegetable, eaten by Okinawans, but mostly the people stay very active and do not care to slow down.

spent two years of my childhood there. Snorkeled all day in the summertime. Had few friends there. At 12 years old I would ride the buses the different parts of the island. Just exploring parts of the jungle. I was lucky I was never snake bit. By a Habu snake. The 70s was the best years of my life. Vietnam was still going full blast.

Great place, so nice to know about their way of living, keeping busy, preserving culture and seasonal food habits. Meeting people and sharing keeps them energetic

The secret to longevity is having a diet made of fresh fruits and vegetables, having a good attitude, not to worry, engaging in an interesting activity like weaving and associating with others.
