China Update: 2022 GDP Slows, Population Shrinks

China saw gross domestic product growth of 3% in 2022, the second slowest pace since the 1970s, while fourth quarter and December data came in better than economists had expected. Meanwhile, the nation's population started shrinking last year for the first time in six decades as births decline despite efforts to encourage bigger families. Population collapse is a real concern in our lifetimes, there will be nowhere to hide

Given how many lockdowns they had, it's not surprising their GDP took a hit. As for their population, well, they are overpopulated as is, they could afford to lose a little. What they have to watch out for is aging population and disproportionate male to female ratio. Also, the amount of work that is taking away from time to have kids and be a parent. Even when they offered more money for new parents they didn't get the results because too many people are being overworked. China has been expanding at such a rapid rate both in terms of GDP and population so it's about time they had a cool down period.

1. As a country becomes more developed, people tend to have fewer children (which results in declining birth rates)
2. Covid added to the number of deaths in the last few years, as well as people not thinking about having kids under zero covid circumstances
3. The countries handling of the pandemic and stricter policies over the years has left many quite dissatisfied with the direction the country was heading, leading to a lot of citizens wanting to leave the country.

These are just my suspicions as a foreigner who has been living in China since 2017 till now (I still live here) and based on my conversations with many of the locals here.

I am a Chinese, and many young people in our forum website do not want to have children because the labor law is not implemented. I think China's fertility rate will be lower and lower. This phenomenon is not only in China, but also in many developed countries.

In fact, the world wide population needs to come down or there won’t be enough resources to go around.
