its always funny to hear how these companies boast record profits year after year paying massive bonuses for ceos and other executives and then they turn around and say "inflation is killing our business so we will cut your jobs to later offer them to new employees at much lower salaries to avoid paying anyone more". the amount of people i personally know affected who thought their job security was solid even after good performance reviews who had just made a new purchase of a car or home now have to hope that another company will take them on to avoid the banks from taking their loans out from under them.

U have interpreted the layoff reason more correct than most and most. Wave started around 2022 Sept. Not ending yet. Recent Cisco 4k layoff too me is understood as not AI reason.

employment rate doesnt say anything... I can be fired from a FAANG company and work as a McDonald's chashier, the umemployment rate will remain same... since both are jobs.

Without a doubt there is excess number of resources in technology areas in almost every company. I personally know at least in 3 to 4 large companies where significant percentage of software engineers/data engineers/middle management have not more 10 hrs. of work in a week.

There is a huge difference between a programmer and software engineers. Those who are advanced degree holders know how to build software architecture and frameworks versus writing simple programs to do something. Optimised, scalable, fast software architecture is still game for software engineers.

It's happening because of a demand-supply imbalance. The same has happened in all other core industries.

little bit of devops? devops consists of git, linux, ci/cd tools, docker, k8, IaaS etc. its an area in itself. have been an infra engineer for 10 years in places like AMD & MSFT. you cannot remember all the skills if you are not working in that. just watching online videos is not going to help. i still recommend strengthen your DS&Algo skills, read DDIA, get an understanding of ML & DL if you are interested in a ML position or MLOps position. nothing more is required for clearing an interview

Lmao its not as easy as harnoor makes it sound. Trust me he himself found the job in 2021/22, he donot know the current market. Ask the actual grads on youtube who went to US, even the ones who went to ivy leagues are not able to find a single job after applying to more than 700 companies.
The software dream is gone, prepare in India and try to do well here, invest in some business because the field is way less rewarding and way more stressful than once it was.
