Amen. Once you get to that dream job or dream company, you find yourself either laid off or burnt out by that point. Just make enough money to build the ideal life for you and your family.

Dream life > dream job.
Couldn't care less about companies and loyalty in tech, though my current companies cool not going to lie, but my end goal is financial independence and FU money.

Dropping absolute facts. Wish people told me this sooner to avoid being disallusioned and the other "dream job" BS we're sold by companies - especially like tech was doing 5 - 10 years ago to new grads. Today people need two backup plans and working toward working for themselves to give themselves a safety net. Job security doesn't really exist anymore. This is the new reality and some people are sadly & unfortunately getting a wake up call after comfortably cruising for years like it would last forever. Self reliance is the new way.

FACTS MAN! I was layed off in March and still searching for another IT job. I'm 36 dedicated 18 years (half) of my life to this company. THESE COMPANIES DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT US. Owning Realestate/Stocks/Crypto starting a business is my way forward.

I'm so glad I learned this lesson at age 20 when I got laid off from my student engineering job. Everything that Dorian is saying here is 100% correct. Focus on yourself and work on your own stuff, have multiple streams of income, savings screw giving 110% to so-called dream jobs that will kick you out in a split second the moment they are going downhill in revenue.

Just like Josh Fluke explained in his videos, the future of employement is skills. Having skills that you can use at any company or for yourself.

Agreed! I'm a physician and though I once thought it was my "dream job" over the course of my career I realized this was definitely not the case. And I just got laid off. I'm done with it. Sitting in an office M-F 9-5 is misery anyway. Even though I have a major challenge ahead of me to replace my income, I know it's ultimately going to be better in the end.

Lol wait. Not everything she worked for is gone. She can get another job and likely be successful there. She still has all her accomplishments and now has Meta on her resume 🤔😄

I love how real your videos are. I'm not even a programmer, but there's such valid advvice here. Thanks

I used to work as much overtime as I could at my previous jobs. Now I would rather use that time for my own purposes. My grandfather once said, "Work is for the dogs." I think of that every now and then.

This sounds like the origin story of a contractor. The same thing happened to me 3 years ago.

My role was made redundant after nearly 5 years. In a consultation meeting, my former head said "were not obligated to promote you" after telling him I've worked close to 5 years, developed, delivered and did everything I was asked to do. I chose to leave because I saw the snake he was. He later replaced permanent staff with contractors then promoted my colleague to a lead while on maternity leave! She'd only been a senior for two months before going on maternity leave. I was pretty burned.

My dream job is to work for myself and work WITH companies. Not for them.

Use the job, don’t let the job use you.
Stay ahead, fam 👏

I feel for her. It's tough to put so much time and effort into something, only to have it not work out. I think she'll be fine down the line because this is just a short downturn (hopefully) and her skills are. incredibly useful! But at the same time, I think it's important to remember that sometimes things don't go according to plan and it's okay. It's all about how we adapt and move forward. I hope she finds a new opportunity that makes her just as happy as her dream job did.

Finally going to finish self teaching and now all these layoffs are happening and am 37. I have worked customer service forever, failed college, became an IT guy in 2016, was fired that same year and never found anything again and went back to tech support and now trying to start html email and I am exhausted. I don't want to go back to college, I don't want to start anything again. I just want it all to be better. I wonder what it was like in the 50's where even a janitor could make enough to buy a house and send their kids to college. quitting to start freelancing scares the crap out of me

Easy to say start working for yourself, but if it was that easy everyone would be doing it.
Starting a new business is tough unless you have millionaire parents. You will have to spend lots of time finding clients, doing lots of administrative work like billing, and dealing with the uncertainty if your idea will work or not. The reality is only half of new start-ups survive the first year, and only 20% make it to year 5. It's a lot of blood, sweat and tears, with no guarantee of success.
If you like being your own boss, or you have absolute faith in your new idea, then sure go for it. But to say this is the right path for everyone is at best overly optimistic and at worst will ruin some people. Some people really do better in a 9 to 5, those people who got fired should be able to find new jobs.

I totally get you Dorian.
I personally don't see anything wrong with programmers giving 0 loyalty to these compannies that will lay them off as soon as the road gets bumpy.
Compannies shouldn't expect workers to be loyal, if they themselves aren't willing to treat their employees the same way.

Great video, and I agree the best investment one can do for oneself's life is to ourselves, to start a project, to compete and give ideal tech solutions, to keep learning new stuff and to find ways to make money passively, that's my dream job.

This video coming the same day I started reading The 4-Hour Work Week, I feel is no coincidence, thank you Dorian, I hope to have a beautiful family and life like you one day <3

Dorian, brother, you hit it right on the mark. I've been working as a Network Engineer contractor since 2019 with loyalty to NO ONE. . . Now, I'm learning to code so I can build something that's mine and that I control 100%. . . You simply cannot trust any company with your living and future. . . . Excellent advice. You are speaking the Truth. This is not even an opinion. This is the Truth.

True, it applies to any field at this point. I am not doing coding anymore I am working towards being a diesel tech. And yea, I am in a good company right now but I know I can’t rely on it as a safety net. Either way I still like the content, cheers.

Funny how all these YouTubers are saying “build my business” when most of the time it’s just their channel that by the way is created on YouTube platform. Hard to call that business :)
