Here's how I add shadows and highlights to cartoon illustrations using Procreate!

For the month of February, I’m going to release a daily short featuring quick Procreate tips…that’s one a day for 28 days! Some of these you may already know…some might contain something new to you! Just remember: everyone is at a different place in their journey of learning. A tip that might be common knowledge for one artist could be an eye-opener to another user just starting out! These will be in addition to my regular tutorials, so don’t worry- it’s not a change in the channel…just a way to share pointers that viewers might miss if they don’t have 30+ minutes to watch a full length video. Thanks for watching…and Keep Creating!

No one talks about how powerful the opacity bar is and this answers my question on how this would effect your work after your render so the opacity stays low when you finalize your work very well done tutorial

Thank you so much for this. I was having a hard time adding shadows and highlights. Especially since my designs are starting to get more details for my pin designs. I'm glad i found this 🙏🏼

Can’t express enough, just how much your pen grip has changed and helped the way I draw. This channel has helped me so much brother. Following your guide on ‘side profile cartoon face’ has become my go to daily sketch and because of this I am now getting more comfortable at trying more realistic, details on nose and ear. Small steps, huge amount of fun. Thank you 🙏🤘✍️🇬🇧

This is amazing!! How do you keep the line one size, instead of tapering off? Can you shape colors/objects to fit an outline? How do you keep the line so steady? Can you copy and paste without having to outline and select something? How do you get more fonts, drawing instruments? How do you blend like if you were blending charcoal or lead? I’m really new to this but I’m loving it so much!

Great video! Another way to create shadows or highlights is to create 2 masked clipping layers, change them both to soft light, the one you want as a shadow layer use the color black. (It will make whatever color your project is slightly darker in that area) and for highlights, use same method but change the color to white. Cheers!

Wow. This was really precise and helpful! Thanks!! Can you share more about how you choose the color for your shadows? Do you go with random dark colors, or you always use complementary?

Thank you for this! I've been struggling with dragging colors to fill parts of my drawings. When I do that, the entire layer gets filled. Any idea what I could be doing wrong? I set the line art layer to reference but nothing seems to work! :-(

Awesome tip but why clipping mask please? You can still use opacity with normal layer. Is there a reason for this?

Great tip! But sir you missed that blue spot on the background

What does it mean when you set it to clipping mask?
