I use ibis paint, I have about 90 layers on each peace of artwork that I make.

There’s an efficient way to layer like.. sketch >line art> color> shading > touch ups. But sometimes I’m way too lazy to keep track of all of that so I do majority of the work on one layer until I feel too precious about it to try anything new so I start a new layer ontop of that and continue add to the piece. It’s not practical especially in a professional setting, but it works for me and I find it fun

I draw on one layer.
Two only if I need to keep the sketch separate

Also, take breaks between some layers. If you find out any layered, starting to get a stressful and tiring time for a break.

My rule is to make a new layer whenever I get the I don’t wanna ruin itttt” feeing. Like saving your game before making a huge story choice 😂

Not saying that you should completely give up but if something isn't working and you're hating it just delete that part of piece or the entire thing. Starting over might help you get to the place you wanted to be or give you a drawing that you love :)

I typically separate layers if there is something Infront of another thing so I can erase the line art of the object behind without messing up the line art of the object in front. also when sketching I put the hands on a seperate later to be able to move and manipulate them easier to put them in a more natural spot

You see, you're correct with "it doesn't matter how much layer it takes! You are creating art so do as many layers as you want!" but my potato ass phone will break to pieces if I draw in ibis paint more than 20 layers. In the end I learn something, that is to be bold and merge my layers together in the end and render tf out of the drawing. By the end of it, I looked like I had only use 3/5 layers lmao

Whenever I make line less art, it always takes so many layers. One piece I did had around 180 layers I think. Because every little thing was on separate layers lol.
I usually average 5 layers on my drawings though

I think depending on art style, the methods that lead to the final piece is different. Though of course they all overlap.
