I thought the whole airplane mode request was nonsense until one time in 2023 I was on a flight waiting for the boarding process to finish. I had been postponing my phones software update for months and the phone had reached the point of no more delays and automatically started the update process. 3mins later boarding is completed and the update is at 15% as we pulled out the bay and took our position for runway take off. Well, 5mins later with update is at 35% and we are still sitting on the runway. Captain has informed us theres a technical issue and will update us shortly. Another 5 mins and update finally completes. No more than 45sec later, the Captain is back on saying we are taking off. He explained that we couldn't take off before because our transponder, the instrument that reads and communicates our position in the sky back to the tower, was not functioning previously but was now back in working order and we were all cleared for takeoff. This experience made me a believer that the airplane mode is important.
