Last September I started walking to lose some weight. After three weeks I bought a cheap backpack and a couple of bags of sand. Every time I lost a kilo of body weight, I put a kilo bag of sand into the back pack. I started at 247 lbs. currently I weight 184 lbs. I do on average 15.000 steps a day. I no longer wear the backpack on every walk but I now do a lot of skipping and body weight exercises like push ups, squats and kettlebell exercises. Feeling pretty good at the moment.

I've found walking to be great for recovery too. It doesn't make sense to go from sitting on a chair like a sloth 95% of the time to full out explosive ape mode for the other 5% of the time. You need light/medium forms of exercise to balance everything out, in my opinion. Also, if you work at home like I do, it's the perfect way to get some fresh air and a change of environment, while also getting exercise. It can be a great reset for the mind too.

I’m 62 and don’t give a damn about being “shredded”. IMO that’s what younger people fall for, for all kinds of reasons. I walk with a weighted backpack and use dumbbell workouts to 1. help stay out of the dr. office. 2. to maintain my 175lb athletic frame. 3. so that I can still be active at 75 and not immobile.

Walking I found to be the most managable, it was easy to keep steps consistency, while it isn’t as easy to do the same exact cardio everyday to keep a steady weight loss. Walking to get shredded worked for me but I was a college student with a lot of free time.

One more thing to note here is that, when you do high intensity cardios you tend to feel more hungry and eat those calories back (and more), but low intensity cardio like walking do not have the same effect. Yes if you do it outside - which you should if the weather is suitable - you might get thirsty, but most likely not that hungry.

I think the main benefit of walking is it’s an easy way to burn calories without increasing hunger.

Slight disagree: I think walking is the best solution long term because I've just noticed that more intense cardio tend to exhaust people to the point where they just stop at some point so even though you burn more calories quickly you still end up losing out on it in the long run.

20k steps every day for a month right now. I have good results (fatloss). However: the time needed is incredibly annoying. I spend around 3 hours a day.
As far as I can tell, 30 minutes of jogging (11 km/h) would reduce 553 kcal (compared to 150-200 kcal when walking 30 min).
That's a lot more manageable. Due to spinal chord and knee problems that I had a few years ago, I chose to not overdo it and start with walking.
I have to say: It works very well, but as I say: Very time-consuming.
As mentioned above: Im currently overweight. Therefore I consider walking superior right now. But in a few kg down the road, I will mix in some more jogging. Just to reduce the time.
A pro that I noticed: the hunger levels are not exploding as when I am jogging for a longer duration.

6’1” 300lbs 17Jul21
By walking … it sucked at first! … by walking and diet change I managed to go from 1/4 mile and needing a nap, to 4 mile walks or 30 minutes out / 30 minutes back = 1 hour total ish … 4 or 5 days a week now I am 215lbs … 61 yrs old

No bread, no sugar, minimal dairy cause I like cream in my coffee… I may not be “omg ripped” but who cares ?! I’m happy healthy and proud of what I have achieved … if being ripped is the only way you can be loved —- look for a better life seriously .. vanity is a killer

My fitness started with walking. Lost weight and felt great and then a I got a Fitbit and got really into the step count. That led to running to keep the intensity and now I do 5k runs three or four times a week and have a Garmin forerunner and am fitter than I have ever been. Getting 15, 000 steps is now just part of my day and no effort at all. My son is obese and he has started walking to the river and back. I am 30 years older but no way he could run with me. Hoping his journey will echo mine although I was never obese.

Walk more really does cover it. I've always found the 10k steps per day mantra pretty myopic. 10, 000 steps for some people is insurmountable, for others it's a shift at work. As a WFHer even hitting 5k in a day can be a ball ache, but I do notice a difference on the scale when I walk significantly over my daily average steps.

Weighted walking up hills is a great full body workout. Re-fill plastic bottles with water and fill a backpack to your ability. That way you can always just pour it out if you get tired or injured. You can do this in the house too, just move around for an hour or so carrying weight while you watch YouTube. My 70ltr pack can comfortably hold 16 x 1.5 ltr bottles so you can get a great scalable workout as you get stronger.

Fabulous work buddy I walk at least 1.5 hours per day. Good 1 hour in the mornings and 30 minutes before evening dinner ❤ burns calories frees my mind and I feel great and it’s easy to do for the majority of people 🎉 keep up the great work 😊

I do 20k steps a day, 10k of them at work (retail) I make sure I hit the 10k by the time I leave work then its 5k to the gym and 5k back. Since this it has made cutting a LOT easier but you really have to make an effort, it's not as simple as a walk round the block of an evening lol. Podcasts help a lot.
