Megatron and Optimus are equals. There is not debating it, and there is too much we know about megatron that points to this. Optimus may be the conduit of Primus, and an immensely effective leader, but Megatron was a warrior. A war hero known all across cybertron, and the most cunning, perceptive, and effective combatant of all his peers. It was in fact megatron who WOULD have gotten the matrix of leadership had it not been for his unbreakable ideals. He didn’t think outside the box like Optimus did, he only saw his own morals, and stuck to those principles unrelentingly. Furthermore, megatron LITERALLY RESISTED THE DIRECT WILL OF THE GOD OF CHAOS. That is no small feat. Optimus and Megatron are unbreakable. Rivals of equal power. One with power bestowed upon him, and one who worked for it.

I will also say, megatron is not evil. He is caring, even. I will use starscream as an example. When megatron woke up, he didn’t kill starscream. He “punished” him. When starscream returned to the decepticons, megatron gave him a chance. He turned a cowardly egotistical fool like starscream into a loyal decepticon. His will is unbreakable, and more often than not irresistible.

(I’ll note, I’m not a megatron fan fanatic, I just like doing character analysis, and there’s a lot more to megatron than meets the eye, no pun intended.)
